Provides frontline library services to a diverse population of users at the Checkout and Information Desk (the Unified Circulation and Reference Desk). Processes local materials and materials from other UM and MOBIUS libraries. In consultation with the Head of Circulation and the Night and Weekend supervisor, may assist with the training and supervising of student workers. Will assist with other duties, such as Reserves and Hold Shelf, as needed. Circulation staff are expected to be open to modify their work schedules on occasion when needed to ensure the Checkout Desk remains open during scheduled hours.
Key Job Duties include:
- Checks out / checks in books, journals, equipment, and other circulating library materials to library users.
- Assists library users via phone, email, or in-person with basic reference questions, policy inquiries, procedural questions, and inquiries about their library account. Knows how and when to refer questions as appropriate.
- Co-supervises student workers in consultation with the Head of Circulation and the Night and Weekend Supervisor.
- Provides support for library print and electronic reserve services.
- Processes incoming and returning materials from MU campus libraries, UM Libraries, and other MOBIUS libraries.
- Assists with borrowing card applications; issues cards as appropriate.
- Opens/Closes the Checkout and Information Desk if needed, including setup of the circulation computers.
- May provide backup to work different shifts, especially for weekend shifts.
- Provides assistance as needed with Hold Shelf tasks, equipment tasks (Ellis and DST equipment), Pickup Lockers, and problem book management.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Shift
Thursdays – Mondays: 10:00am-7:00pm;
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Six months of library experience. Directly related education or training may be substituted for experience.
- Supervisory experience.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to explain issues clearly and work to satisfactorily resolve problems. Strong interpersonal and customer service skills. Ability to work with others collaboratively and respectfully.
- Ability to exercise discretion and judgment including handling confidential patron information.
- Competence using computer software and equipment.
- This position requires some physical stamina and involves moving materials and related physical actions as part of the workday. Must be able to move fully loaded book trucks (at least 200 lbs.).
- Must be able to read call numbers on books located on shelves at ground level and up to nine feet in height and where lighting is diminished; ladders and footstools are available.
Anticipated Hiring Range
Salary Range: $14.51 to $14.76 hourly
