The Wilmer Eye Institute seeks a flexible and innovative Librarian III to manage and provide services for the Friedenwald-Romano Library as a solo librarian. The Librarian manages all daily operations of the library, including library specific projects and research. This position requires a broad understanding of collection management, acquisitions, access services, reference support, cataloging, resource management, and special collections management. The position works locally to support the Wilmer Eye Institute yet collaborates with colleagues in the Welch Medical Library and across the Johns Hopkins Libraries. The position reports to the Administrator for the Wilmer Eye Institute, and coordinates library work with the Associate Director, Content & Discovery in the Welch Medical Library.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Maintains a thorough understanding of and communicates library policies effectively.
- Answers general reference questions using the Wilmer and Welch Library collections and resources, and provides deeper research support where needed or refers to staff of the Welch Medical Library.
- Assists faculty, students, and staff in accessing resources and works with the Welch Library to troubleshoot resource access issues.
- Teaches faculty, students, and staff how to use the online JH Libraries catalog.
- Creates instructional resources including video tutorials, tip sheets and FAQs, and refers patrons to relevant instructional resources available on the Welch Medical Library website.
- Manages and performs all circulation functions including checking materials in and out of the library, fulfilling physical item requests, and troubleshooting circulation issues.
- Monitors and communicates with patrons regarding overdue and/or lost items.
- Maintains annual subscription for eresources not managed through the Welch Medical Library.
- In consultation with faculty, manages acquisitions of physical materials for the Wilmer Library collection.
- Uses both OCLC and Alma to copy catalog print resource records and maintain holdings.
- Edits and modifies library item, copy, and bibliographic records, as needed, to align with JH Libraries records management best practices and emerging protocols.
- Works with the Welch Medical Library on projects to evaluate and process physical collections materials and standardize cross JH Libraries cataloging and physical item management.
- Oversees management of physical collections housed at the remote Library Service Center.
- Manages oversight of un-cataloged archives and special collection items, including inventories, locations, and access permissions to these items. Where needed develops new workflows to support best practices in managing archival and special collections materials.
- Liaises with the Welch Medical Library on coordination and planning for any systems (catalog, etc.) changes, upgrades, and/or training.
- Prepares annual and quarterly reports.
- Evaluate resources and services on an ongoing basis.
Minimum Qualifications
- MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or an advanced related Degree.
- Three years professional library experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in an academic, research, or health sciences library.
- Experience working successfully in a multi-library organizational structure.
- Understanding of library standards and protocols.
- Library technical services experience with cataloging, serials, or acquisitions.

Role/Level/Range: ATP/04/PD
Starting Salary Range: $62,900 - $110,100 Annually ($69,200 targeted; Commensurate w/exp.)
Employee group: Full Time
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 28-30 hours/week 5 days/wk: 6 hrs/day, or 3.5-4 days/week, with a combination of three 7.5 hr full days & a shorter day
