Public Relations Coordinator

Chicago Department of Aviation

Communications Division

Under direction, the Public Relations Coordinator oversees the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) functions of the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA), and assists with planning and directing the public relations and public education functions of the CDA, while also serving as a key liaison between the department and the media.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Oversees a staff of one in drafting and reviewing responses to more than 1,100 annual Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.
  2. Works closely with other departments, including the Mayor’s Office and the Department of Law, to draft departmental correspondence.
  3. Directs internal communications to the CDA’s 1,600+ employees across multiple work sites.
  4. Plans, directs, and reviews public relations activities to enhance public awareness of CDA programs and initiatives.
  5. Prepares narrative and activity reports on communication, public information, and outreach efforts.
  6. Coordinates the writing, design, and layout of brochures, pamphlets, and other materials describing departmental programs and services.
  7. Coordinates airport special events by collaborating with internal and external stakeholders and vendors.
  8. Directs the management of the annual Communications budget; makes recommendations to increase or decrease as needed; processes orders and payments to vendors and performers.
  9. Assists with the preparation of departmental reports.
  10. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Additional duties may be required for this position.

LOCATION: Chicago Department of Aviation

DAYS: Monday - Friday

HOURS: 8:00 A.M. - 4:00 P.M. (Must be flexible for early and/or late meetings and weekends)

NOTE: The candidate(s) selected for hire must pass an airport background check and a Security Threat Assessment (STA).

THIS POSITION IS EXEMPT FROM CAREER SERVICE

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in journalism, Communications or a directly related field, PLUS at least five (5) years of experience in the development and implementation of public information programs, including two (2) years of supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

NOTE: This position requires a VALID DRIVER'S LICENSE at the time of hire.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

  • Extensive knowledge of the Illinois FOIA and its exemptions
  • A Master’s Degree in Business Administration or Public Administration
  • Previous work experience drafting, editing, and writing for the general public.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge of the GovQA platform used by the City of Chicago for FOIA responses

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS: This position requires candidates to successfully complete an interview, which will include a writing exercise. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the interview and the written exercise, will be selected.
