Strengthening and empowering all of the communities we serve.

Syracuse.com and The Post-Standard are looking for an Education reporter to join our watchdog/public affairs team, in the Syracuse, New York area.

We’re hiring an education reporter to cover local schools and colleges, including Syracuse University. In Syracuse, we have the fortune of strong public schools with high-quality teachers and students. We also have high school taxes, pockets of low achievement, a mental health crisis, economic inequities, inflexible leadership and skirmishes in America’s culture wars.

The university is an important and aggressive economic force worthy of hard-nosed reporting, especially as the Trump administration targets colleges.

We're looking for someone who can produce coverage with impact: building sources, digging into data, solving problems, finding fault, and advocating for people who need help. You should be able to find powerful stories about the success and struggles of our youth and families.

You’ll find support in this newsroom that is expanding its audience and reach, learning new approaches and driving the discussion in this area. Our skilled newsroom has won national awards and dominated the state awards for years.

This position pays between $50,000 to $62,000 annually.

This isn’t an entry-level job. To be considered, demonstrate that you’ve delivered difficult work somewhere. If that’s you, come here and make a difference.

Candidates are required to provide a cover letter telling your story and share links to your best published stories.

Qualified candidates should have:

·       A bachelor’s degree in journalism or communications or related field preferred.

·       Minimum two years' experience

·       The ability to work quickly but with accuracy and good news judgment.

·       Watchdog or investigative journalism experience.

·       Ability to develop and cultivate sources.

·       Good understanding of using social media for research and to engage readers.

·       Digital storytelling skills and open mind to trying new approaches.

·       Relentless curiosity and a good sense of humor.

It’s not a remote job. We expect you to regularly come into the office, where committed journalists learn from each other and build a culture of strong reporting and storytelling every day.

This job requires reliable transportation to meet with sources or cover events.
