Zando, a nimble independent publisher, is seeking an experienced and collaborative Managing Editor to join our growing and dynamic team. Reporting to our Director of Publishing Operations, the Managing Editor will produce an exciting list of high-quality fiction and nonfiction titles. They will work closely with editorial, design, and manufacturing production departments as well as external partners to oversee and guide books through the preproduction process, including tracking manuscripts, coordinating with teams, maintaining publication schedules, and communicating key information. This is a full-time position: hybrid based in New York, NY or remote. Zando offers competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee the day-to-day of all production editorial functions
  • Use title management system to create and track schedules
  • Review manuscript transmittals, layouts, covers, proofs, and galley copies for compliance with company standards
  • Act as production editor on a portion of the list
  • Hire, manage, and evaluate freelance copy editors, proofreaders, and indexers
  • Run weekly production status meetings
  • Track book-related materials for sales and marketing uses

Qualifications

  • At least 8 years of progressive experience in Managing Editorial or Production Editorial, ideally within trade book publishing
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment
  • Deep understanding of dynamic book scheduling and priority-setting
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to interact with colleagues across various departments and external partners
  • Solid copy editing and proofreading skills; strong grasp of grammar, punctuation, and style consistency, ensuring adherence to the company’s editorial guidelines and standards
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; Adobe Acrobat Pro DC; title management systems
