Summer Library Assistants perform the same duties of a regular Librarian Assistant I, but the focus of the summer assistant is to provide customer service and program support for the summer library program as directed by the Children's Librarian. The Summer Library Assistants are supervised by the Library Director and are responsible for regularly reporting to the Children's Librarian.
A. Responsibilities
- Assists with the summer library program and other projects as directed by the Children's Librarian.
- Assists with the preparation and presentation of programs and services for children and teens in collaboration with youth services staff.
- Assists patrons with registration for the summer library program; maintains and updates spreadsheet of summer library program participants and their progress.
- Participates in the promotion of youth services, programs, and collections.
B. Customer Service
- Provides assistance in the use of the library and its resources by the public.
- Assists patrons with finding desired materials.
- Assists patrons with basic use of InfoSoup, public Internet computers, and SAM sign-up computers.
- Assists patrons with checking out materials using Carl interface.
- Assists in the maintenance of good public relations.
C. Other Duties
- Assists with special projects as assigned by full-time librarians.
- Participates in regular staff meetings and other training opportunities as assigned by the Library Director.
Required Skills:
- Knowledge of computers, word processing, spreadsheets, and electronic information resources including the Internet.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions; ability to interpret and apply technical instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to work independently, organize and prioritize work, respond to varied/changing work demands, and make decisions as required.
- Ability to sustain prolonged visual concentration and keyboarding activity.
- Ability to maintain and foster cooperative and courteous working relationships with the public, peers, and Library Director.
- Ability to lift and carry 30 pounds and maneuver a fully loaded book cart.
The position offers 10-15 hours per week in the summer with the opportunity to begin training and regular hours in April. This is a temporary seasonal position that ends in August.
