Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI) is a diversified media company with expansive reach at the national and local level dedicated to empowering and enriching communities. We seek to inspire, inform, and connect audiences as a scalable, growth-focused media and digital marketing solutions company.

The Enterprise is looking for a reporter to cover K-12 education in Brockton, Massachusetts, and the surrounding towns, a high-profile beat of interest to students, parents, teachers, and taxpayers as they grapple with getting learning back on track post-COVID. This is not a sit-in-meetings-and-report beat.

The successful candidate must be able to cover breaking news and quick-turnaround daily stories alongside enterprise and watchdog projects that hold city and school officials accountable. This beat presents great opportunities for data-based reporting.

In this role, you will also get to write for and about students most impacted by America’s legacy of discrimination and its ongoing impact on education.

If you are passionate about flexing your reporting and writing muscles through riveting storytelling, this is a role for you.

Brockton, Massachusetts, known as the “City of Champions,” has undergone a dramatic demographic transformation, particularly in the past decade, and is now majority people of color. Home to vibrant African-American, Cape Verdean, and Haitian communities, this city of about 100,000 located halfway between Boston and Providence has become a beacon of affordable suburban and urban housing.

HIGHLIGHTS:

The ideal candidate will:

  • Create daily content about education that accurately informs and engages our audiences
  • Own the story of education in the aftermath of COVID and a future with or without the Department of Education
  • Give special focus to the impact of disrupted learning on members of marginalized communities, relying on interviews with community members, records searches, and discussions with experts.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or master’s in communications, journalism, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 3 or more years of professional journalism experience or significant internship experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work well on deadline
  • Ability to produce content that is clean, accurate, and publication-ready
  • Understanding of reporting ethics and sourcing
  • This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
  • Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment, post-offer drug screen, motor vehicle record check, and background check.

How to Apply:

We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don’t limit your upload to a resume; show us what you’ve done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:

  • Your resume – one to two pages
  • A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job
  • Links to 3-6 online samples of your work

Show us what you’ve produced or had a hand in that best reflects what you can do in your desired role. It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.
