Job Summary

Primary Location: Spaulding Hospital Cambridge

Shift: Shift Differentials:

Key Responsibilities

  1. Provides continuous observation and surveillance of assigned patients.
  2. First line of action is to verbally redirect the patient from engaging in at risk behaviors.
  3. Summons the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance by communication device or STAT Alert Alarm (if appropriate).
  4. Knowledgeable and supportive of patient and institutional confidentiality and related hospital policies.
  5. Demonstrates understanding and proficiency of the use of the Video Monitoring (VM) software.
  6. Maintains visual observation at all times.
  7. Verbally redirects patient over digital 2-way audio device that is in patient room.
  8. Immediately summons the nursing staff if the patient requires assistance.
  9. Demonstrates the knowledge and skill necessary to provide the appropriate care to this patient population based on the patients individualized treatment plan as delegated by the RN.
  10. Participates in hand-off of pertinent information/behavior about assigned patients when arriving on unit and upon completion of shift assignment.
  11. Provides patient with explanations as necessary, but does not consult or provide opinions.
  12. Demonstrates behaviors in line with Service Excellence.
  13. Seeks help or advice as soon as possible when patient appears to pose a threat to themselves or others.
  14. Participates in a collaborative identification and reporting of patient safety issues.
  15. Assures patient environment safety.
  16. Seeks assistance with removal of any potential safety hazard from room and reports findings to RN.
  17. Demonstrates safe work practices and attitudes, follows safety rules, works to prevent unsafe conditions and behaviors, and participates in organizational and department safety programs.

Expectations while on Duty

  1. Dedicated attention to observing patients with no outside distractions (no answering of phones unless calls to monitor station, etc.).
  2. Staying connected with audio by never taking off the headset.
  3. Never leave monitor station unattended. If you need to step away, call for backup first.
  4. No food or drink in patient care areas.
  5. Keep your workplace clean and tidy.
  6. No cell phone use in patient care areas.
  7. Maintain required documentation.

Qualifications

Education/Degree Required: High School Diploma/ GED

Skills (Specific learned activity gained through training):

Required

  1. Effective verbal, electronic and written communications skills using the English language.
  2. Computer proficiency required. Microsoft office applications preferred with ability to learn new software.
  3. Maintain variable work schedule to meet department needs (evenings and nights, holidays, weekends and travel).

Preferred

  1. Highly developed communications and interpersonal skills, working with diverse population.
  2. Work independently, be self-directed and contribute as a member of a team.
  3. Anticipates challenges and develops and implements strategies for addressing them.
  4. High level of service delivery. Demonstrate initiative with ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines and adapt to changing situations.
  5. Attention to detail.
