Job Goal:

The Adult Services Supervisor oversees and leads staff at their branch. Reporting to the branch manager and in collaboration with the Youth Services Supervisor, this position plans, schedules, and organizes employees' work to meet branch and library goals.

KCKPL was formed in 1893 and came under the authority of the Kansas City, Kansas Public School District Board of Education in 1899, where it remains today. It serves a population of approximately 169,245. The mission of Kansas City, Kansas Public Library is to connect members of a dynamic community with information, tools, resources, and welcoming spaces to enrich lives in Wyandotte County.

Essential Functions

Supervisor
  • Oversees the day-to-day workings of the department and ensures quality customer service for patrons.
  • Plans, schedules, and organizes work activities to meet department goals.
  • Hires, supervises, and establishes performance expectations for employees.
  • Ensures staff are trained in the skills needed to perform their jobs and provides the motivation and support for continued growth.
  • Evaluates and revises workflow and procedures to ensure department efficiency.
  • Recommends policy development or revisions to manager, as necessary.
  • Responsible for working within budget guidelines established by the manager.
  • Prepares reports and statistical information as needed.
  • Addresses patron concerns regarding accounts or library service.
  • Assists in collection development by recommending materials based on community interest.
  • In collaboration with other Adult Services Supervisors and Youth Services Supervisors, works with other agencies and institutions to develop services and initiatives for the community.
  • Response for branch programming plan and implementation of programs. Ensures that programming is appropriate to meet community needs.
  • Responsible for promotional outreach in the community and serves as liaison with community agencies.

Public Service
  • Responsible for circulation desk duties, including assisting patrons in person and over the phone.
  • Welcomes and registers new library users to library services, technology, and procedures.
  • Provides professional reference and reader's advisory assistance to patrons, including one-on-one assistance.
  • Assists patrons with use of library computers and equipment. Helps patrons troubleshoot technology issues.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Able to provide own transportation to outreach locations as needed.

Qualifications
  • Master of Library Science degree from an accredited institution, or equivalent mix of education and experience.
  • Minimum of two years of progressive library experience preferred.
  • Solid understanding of library services, principles, and mission.
  • Ability to manage department staffing and schedules and supervise, coach, and support individuals.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with direct reports, supervisors, and colleagues, both verbally and in writing.
  • Must effectively work independently and be self-directed, be detail oriented, and able to recognize and set priorities.
  • Advanced computer competency and typing skills including familiarity with Internet, email, word processing, graphics, multimedia, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required and provide own transportation to outreach locations as needed.
  • Completion of a background check meeting library standards

Vacation, disability, and personal days granted annually pursuant to KCKPS Board Policies, GARH - Absences, leave and vacation. Salary based on library classification and salary schedule. Placement on the schedule based on qualifications and experience. A willingness to work evenings, weekends and extra duty as needed is a condition of employment.
