Estimated Salary Range $53,271.04-$62,535.56 - Salary based on experience and education.
Under limited supervision, this position is responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, and leading a variety of educational and outreach events and activities in support of Newport News Waterworks’ mission.
This is a professional position involving understanding and compilation of community goals and standards, requiring independent judgment and action to create and convey science-based information in a way that engages and influences behavior change through a variety of outreach platforms. Reports to the Public Education Coordinator.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Assists in the coordination of public outreach on specialized departmental projects, including assisting with the development of Waterworks outreach brochures and customer newsletters.
- May assist with producing internal and external communications such as employee communications and podcasts.
- Coordinates environmental education activities with public school curriculum.
- Plans, researches, develops, coordinates, and implements programs, events, tours, strategies, and activities to promote a positive image of the department and to keep the public informed of the department’s programs, events, activities, and accomplishments.
- Responsible for the development and organization of water education lesson plans for a variety of diverse groups and audiences, including hands-on activities using the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL’s); maintains supplies for each lesson and planned activity.
- Assists in developing a Citizen Water Academy for the public to showcase what occurs ‘behind the tap’ that enables Newport News Waterworks to deliver quality drinking water.
- Utilizes various computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, media applications, graphic design, and print production in support of research activities, presentations, or other communications efforts.
- Responsible for coordinating, developing, and updating the educational content on the Waterworks website.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Public Administration, Liberal Arts, or a related field and 2 - 3 years of related experience in teaching or training or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check and a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work. Some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (15-20 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station. Occasional standing for long periods.
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURES
Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
