Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job:The department invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position, beginning Fall 2025. The position involves teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in communication studies, contributing to core offerings in the major, and developing courses in the candidates area(s) of expertise.
Required teaching could include courses such as conflict, risk, relationship, dark side, environmental, advanced family, the pedagogy of public speaking, or strategic communication at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Online teaching experience is desirable. The teaching load is three courses per semester, including graduate teaching.
We seek a communication scholar whose research and teaching interests complement the departments strengths. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to engage in scholarly inquiry in one or more areas of communication studies, including but not limited to interpersonal, organizational, instructional, family, or science communication. Scholars using quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods are welcome to apply.
Candidate should have a Ph.D. (in hand prior to start date) in Communication Studies.
Experience Required for the Position:Experience teaching at the college level and online teaching are considered positive qualifications.
Other Requirements for the Position:Candidates should have a record of conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications that strongly indicate future success in scholarly research, evidence of excellent teaching, a record of service, and the ability to teach courses that will contribute to our undergraduate and graduate curriculum. Where appropriate, the candidate will be expected to collaborate with colleagues to advance Sam Houston State Universitys research mission by pursuing research funding, strategic development initiatives, and collaborative partnerships.
The ideal candidate will show evidence of a strong research agenda and a commitment to excellent teaching and mentoring. The position involves teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in communication studies, contributing to core offerings in the major, and developing courses in the candidates area(s) of expertise.
Our department offers both a BA and BS in Communication Studies and an online MA in Communication Studies with a strong interpersonal communication focus. The department prepares students for a variety of fields, including teaching at all levels, public advocacy, public relations, governmental relations, and law. The department also offers an innovative communication research lab that supports a variety of faculty research programs.
