Job Summary: We are seeking an experienced and resourceful Assistant News Editor who thrives in a fast-paced news environment. The ideal candidate will have strong news judgment, excellent writing and editing skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. This role requires someone who can turn around stories quickly, work closely with freelancers and staff writers to refine pitches, and analyze audience data to inform editorial decisions.

Key Responsibilities:

• Write and edit news stories with speed, accuracy, and clarity, often on tight deadlines.
• Assign stories to freelancers and staff writers, ensuring high editorial standards.
• Refine pitches and provide feedback to writers to strengthen story angles and impact.
• Conduct in-depth research and fact-checking to ensure accuracy and credibility.
• Stay on top of breaking news by monitoring social media, press conferences, community sources, radio, and news networks.
• Leverage SEO best practices to optimize content for search and audience growth.
• Analyze audience data and performance metrics to inform editorial decisions.
• Build and maintain a strong network of sources and contacts.
• Conduct hard-hitting interviews and pursue stories relentlessly, refusing to take no for an answer when necessary.
• Collaborate with the social media team to craft engaging news content that aligns with the brand’s voice and increases audience engagement.
• Support the News Editor in managing editorial workflows and maintaining high content standards.
• Exhibit strong leadership, communication, and management skills to mentor and guide team members.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, English, or a related field.
• Proven experience in an editorial role, preferably in digital media.
• Strong writing, editing, and headline-writing skills.
• Deep understanding of SEO, audience engagement strategies, and digital analytics.
• Ability to multitask and produce high-quality work under tight deadlines.
• Sharp news judgment and ability to identify compelling stories.
• Strong research skills and willingness to go the extra mile to get the story right.
• Experience managing freelancers and staff writers.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with multiple teams, including social media and analytics.
• A proactive, resourceful, and creative mindset.
• Established network of sources or willingness to build one quickly.
• Willingness to ask tough questions and pursue difficult interviews.
