Fortune is seeking an experienced, creative, enterprising editor to run our News desk in the U.S. and help the executive news editor grow digitally across several verticals.

This is a key role on the global news team who will help shape how we cover the big business, economics, finance, management, tech, and career/workplace stories of the day. The ideal candidate is interested in working closely and quickly with reporters and other editors to produce engaging and intelligent stories and distill complex topics into well-framed must-reads.

As the global news desk includes sub-sections like Commentary, Real Estate, and Success (coverage of workplace culture, careers, and the future of work), this is a wide-ranging role that involves close collaboration with a range of journalists and editors. It’s a perfect fit for someone who loves being part of the daily business news cycle as well as finding unique and creative angles into the stories of the day.

As the Deputy U.S. News Editor, you will:

  1. Assign and edit several articles per day on a range of topics in business and economics, from an unexpected Elon Musk move to stock market predictions to the identity of an accused crypto hacker.
  2. Work closely with, manage, and mentor rising news reporters, interns, and fellows, helping them improve their pitches, reporting, and writing.
  3. Collaborate effectively with other editors on the global News team, including our Success and Commentary sections, and across other desks on topics like finance, cryptocurrency, tech, leadership, and health and wellness.
  4. Monitor and pull stories from wire services for important news that doesn’t rise to the level of an original article.
  5. Punch up headlines with an eye toward the digital audience.
  6. Ensure our coverage includes a diversity of ideas, perspectives, and voices.
  7. Uphold Fortune’s standards of journalistic rigor, accuracy, and fairness.

The right candidate:

  1. Has at least five years’ experience editing business news on a fast-paced desk; knows the business news landscape well and can see and find opportunities to drive coverage and readership at Fortune.
  2. Be confident and proficient in financial and economic news with knowledge of key industry leaders.
  3. Serves as an editorial leader, providing smart, authoritative direction for reporters and insights into the topics and framings that will resonate with our target digital audience.
  4. Reads a lot of news from a breadth of sources and has a pulse on the most important business, economics, and top stories of the day.
  5. Roll-up-your-sleeves mentality, occasionally writing/reporting and leading by example as needed.
  6. Understands business trends and economic indicators.
  7. Can turn a jumble of ideas into clean, accurate, and insightful copy on deadline.
  8. Can juggle multiple assignments at once and move quickly and decisively.
  9. Comfortable using real-time reader data tools like Parsely, Chartbeat, or Google Analytics to inform story and headline choices and give feedback to reporters.
  10. Willingness to occasionally be pinged outside of 9-5 hours in the case of breaking news and ready to jump on with a plan.
  11. Is interested in reaching new audiences by thinking about SEO and social headlines.
  12. Is infinitely curious; generates fresh, compelling story ideas and angles on the topic everyone is talking about for original takes of fact, analysis, and/or framing.
  13. Communicates and manages professionally and effectively in a remote/hybrid environment.
  14. Has experience using readership data to inform and inspire story choices, build on what’s working and pivot away from what isn’t.
  15. Is a quick study, has a fast metabolism and an ability to respond and shift gears quickly and intelligently.
  16. Motivates staff writers and manages them to thrive.

A few of Fortune’s perks and benefits:

  1. Flexible working hours and schedule: We expect our editorial staff to show up consistently and meet deadlines, but there’s no need to take PTO for a midday doctor’s appointment or to leave an hour early for a flight. Working in news can mean nontraditional hours, and we work with each staffer to make sure there’s appropriate comp time for special projects.
  2. 20 vacation days and 2 personal days on top of 11 company holidays and an honor-based sick leave policy.
  3. Health, dental, and vision coverage (90% paid for individuals and families), along with flexible spending accounts where Fortune contributes to your HSA.
  4. Generous parental leave.
  5. Dependent care, commuter, and cell phone benefits.
  6. Tuition reimbursement program.
  7. A commitment to an open, inclusive, and diverse work culture.

Some great candidates may not fit neatly into what we’ve described above or have key skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

All applicants should submit a resume and cover letter explaining briefly how this role is a fit for your background, skills, and career goals.
