PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Perform routine clerical and technical duties so the librarian is free to work directly with students and teachers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education/Certification:
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- An associates (or higher) degree OR meet the rigorous standard of quality required by the district.
- Library Technical Assistance training - preferred.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Strong communication, public relations, organizational skills.
- Computer skills are mandatory.
- Proficient skills in typing.
- Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills.
- Ability to shelve books following district cataloging system.
- Ability to work well with children.
- Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written).
Work Conditions:
Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard library equipment including imaging equipment; standard instructional equipment.
Posture: Regular sitting, standing, kneeling, squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; regular overhead reaching; climbing ladders.
Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds); occasional moderate lifting and carrying (up to 40 pounds).
Environment: Work inside; work alone; exposure to biological and chemical hazards such as mold and dust.
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruption; maintain emotional control under stress.
Regular attendance is an essential function.
Minimum Experience:
- One or more years preferable in an office or library clerical position.
- Experience working with school age children - preferred.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Instructional:
- Assist students and teachers in locating both print and electronic information and help instruct teachers and students on computer/internet usage and how to access the electronic card catalog and other institutions, online catalogs, and databases.
- Help students create a final product through the use of all library resources.
- Read to small groups of students and listen to individual students read aloud - elementary only.
- Supervise and monitor students as assigned and assist librarian and teachers to maintain appropriate student behavior and an orderly atmosphere.
Technology:
- Help with the operation, instruction, and maintenance of library technology devices and assist students and teachers in the use of the online automation system.
- Operate, instruct, troubleshoot, and maintain audiovisual equipment, technology devices, and other equipment in the library.
Acquisitions/Cataloging/Collection Maintenance:
- Maintain library automation systems by loading or attaching and deleting records.
- Periodically publish updated lists of new materials, recent acquisitions, video inventory, etc.
- Assist the librarian with annual inventory and make corrections in electronic shelf list as needed.
- Maintain records of material ordered and received.
Circulation:
- Use online circulation systems to check materials, make library cards, maintain records such as overdues, inventories, and keep a check in/out calendar for equipment.
- Assist students and teachers in locating print and non-print resources.
- Locate and prepare carts of materials needed by teachers for projects in the classroom.
Clerical:
- Operate library in absence of librarian, performing such duties as logging onto online databases.
- Submit work orders for equipment repairs; maintain and order supplies at the librarian’s request.
- Maintain organizational integrity of the library facility including shelving, displays, and bulletin boards.
- Maintain financial records relating to lost book payments, book fair sales, and overdue fines.
Other:
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Ensure compliance with all local policies and state and federal statutes including the Educator Code of Ethics.
- Perform such other tasks and accept such other responsibilities as may be assigned.
