The Polysomnographic Technologist plays a vital role in patient care by preparing patients, conducting overnight physiologic studies (polysomnograms), and gathering essential information for accurate interpretation by physicians. This role requires a commitment to maintaining alertness in a non-stimulating environment and knowing when to seek guidance from supervisory staff regarding patient status.
Responsibilities
Prepare patients and conduct overnight physiologic studies and polysomnograms (PSG), ensuring quality data collection per established protocols.
Manage data acquisition by formatting optical disks, retrieving, and archiving data, while anticipating data space limitations.
Identify and appropriately respond to patient medical issues, including respiratory problems or cardiac events, and activate emergency procedures when necessary.
Ensure emergency equipment is operational and ready before each study.
Foster effective communication and collaboration with patients, families, and healthcare teams to resolve care challenges.
Maintain vigilance and detail orientation to ensure the quality of PSG data, consulting with healthcare professionals as needed.
Work predominantly overnight, demonstrating the ability to remain alert throughout the shift while reviewing patient records and orders for comprehensive understanding.
Qualifications
Education:
High school graduate, with a preference for candidates with prior education in allied health or life sciences for better comprehension of complex physiology. Experience:
Minimum of three years of healthcare-related experience. Licensure:
Credentialing as a Registered Polysomnography Technologist or equivalent is mandatory, with preferred additional certifications. Special Skills:
Strong understanding of cardiorespiratory, neurological, and sleep/wake physiology. Physical Demand:
Flexibility for overnight and varying shifts is essential. Non-registered technologists must complete the training curriculum within 7 months and pass the registry exam within 13 months of hire. This position is essential for those dedicated to improving patient sleep health and well-being.
