Purpose/Summary

GENERAL SUMMARY

The mission of CCD's Department of Communication, Journalism, and World Languages is to support the development of students' communication skills for effective use in personal, professional, and public contexts. Adjunct instructors within the department fulfill this mission each semester by teaching Communication (COM) courses with enrolled students that are pursuing a variety of educational pathways.
Duties and Responsibilities
Primary teaching duties will be within the Communication (COM) discipline. COM Courses are typically three credit hours, and the primary course taught by instructors is COM 115: Public Speaking (although a variety of other COM courses are regularly scheduled and may be assigned, depending on the semester and availability of instructors). Beyond teaching, adjunct instructors are active participants in professional development, department projects, observations, and program assessment. The department is committed to closing the achievement gap in COM courses through systematic data review, reflection, and implementation of practices to improve student outcomes. The department is committed to student-centered teaching that fosters personal and academic success of our students, who are predominantly first-generation and from backgrounds underrepresented in higher education. Ideal candidates will be able to help transition new students into the college experience. Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: A Master's Degree in Communication or a closely related discipline or sub-discipline is required
  • OR a Master's Degree in any discipline WITH 18 graduate credit hours in the Communication discipline.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:
  • One (1) year teaching experience in the Communication discipline
  • Experience teaching diverse, multi-cultural populations (i.e. first generation, low income, minority, non-traditional, veterans, students with accommodation needs, etc.).

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of and a sensitivity the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • Ability to examine and re-mediate instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support the diverse learning needs of students.
  • Ability to navigate and successfully work within online educational platforms including Banner, Desire2Learn, EAB Campus, etc.

Adjunct Instructors
