The Deputy Law Librarian supports and assists the Law Librarian with the administration and management of the Rhode Island Supreme Court Law Library and four (4) county law libraries. The Deputy Law Librarian provides research, reference, and bibliographical assistance to the courts, state government agencies, attorneys, self-represented litigants, and citizens of the state using traditional and electronic research methods.

The Deputy Law Librarian is responsible for:

  1. Providing professional consultation to judges and court units;
  2. Providing training to lawyers, students, staff, and others on the use of electronic resources such as Westlaw, LexisNexis, HeinOnline, and other legal research databases;
  3. Cataloging (original and copy) and entering the cataloging into the library’s integrated library system;
  4. Providing user services such as circulation, interlibrary loan, and password management;
  5. Coordinating technical services and troubleshooting technical issues with the Judicial Technology Department;
  6. Performing periodic reviews of new and existing resources to ensure improved service and research efficiencies;
  7. Assisting the Law Librarian with the Federal Depository Library Program, budget planning, library finances, and all other related duties as may be assigned by the Law Librarian.
  8. Maintaining an active presence in professional library organizations and with other research libraries;
  9. Working in any of the Law Library’s five (5) locations as required.

The position of Deputy Law Librarian requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution; Master’s Degree in Library & Information Science preferred and a minimum of three years of experience in a law library or equivalent setting. Candidates must have significant experience with legal research, ILS systems, Westlaw, LexisNexis, OCLC, and Microsoft Office. Strong organizational, interpersonal, and written and oral communication skills are required.
