THE POSITION
The Shapiro Administration is working to deliver real results for Pennsylvanians and solve the everyday problems they face. The Administration's agency communications teams play a crucial role in helping to promote exciting initiatives across the Commonwealth and effectively communicate the work and message of the Administration. Whether it's planning communications around the improvement of the Unemployment Compensation system, hosting a press conference on the Department's work to crack down on labor law compliance violations, or highlighting the millions of dollars invested in workforce development, the Labor and Industry (L&I) communications team is focused on reaching Pennsylvanians where they are and helping to make government a force for good every day.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
At L&I, this role leads communications for a very public-facing department that handles everything from boiler, elevator, and ski lift safety to workers compensation to the registration of new apprenticeship programs. The Communications Director must be able to juggle multiple topics, tasks, and assignments at any given time, taking direction from both the Secretary and the Governor's Office of Communications. Unlike some agencies, L&I does not have regional communications teams; this position will be the leader of the sole communications/public relations team for the department, and as such, they must have an understanding that their work speaks for thousands of workers and has a real impact on the public's perception of the department.
As a Communications Director 3, it is imperative to be an innovative leader and a team player with a strong sense of purpose, commitment, and personal responsibility to manage a team of four or five employees and ensure the Secretary has the appropriate materials for press events, stakeholder meetings, and any other convening where the Department's or Administration's work is being discussed.
