Beginning with the iconic Chicago Daily Law Bulletin in 1854, we have steadily grown our business-critical and award-winning content. Law Bulletin Media is a diversified information company serving the legal, real estate and financial markets. We are seeking an Editor for our CDLB Department.
Position Summary:
The editor reports to the publisher and is charged with leading the newsroom, directing news coverage, and fulfilling the company’s collaboratively developed content strategy, both digital and print. The editor has the first and last word in getting the flagship newspaper to press and delivering the news content to the online newspaper, social media and the company’s digital platform Lawyerport. The newspaper is published digitally 5 days per week and in print 3 days per week.
The editor is a hands-on, in-the-trenches post. The editor, with support from the publisher, the editorial team and other company contributors, is intimately involved in story selection and assignment, coaching reporters, doing substantive editing, visual design and working with the Publisher on strategic planning for growth. The editor is an integral part of a leadership team growing the digital and multimedia dimensions of everything we do – online, alerts, video and collaborative data journalism – to achieve company goals.
The editor has a similar set of responsibilities with Chicago Lawyer, a glossy monthly with high production values and an affluent audience of legal professionals. The editor oversees the Chicago Lawyer’s managing editor and needs experience in long-form journalism, enterprise journalism, and magazine publishing – digital and print.
The editor has budget responsibilities and works with the publisher to develop annual budgets and manage to the budget throughout the year.
In all endeavors, the editor will need to be guided by hard-news sensibilities (as opposed to features or fluff), astute news judgment, the company’s content strategy and a commitment to the highest journalistic standards and ethics.
