The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for a Proposal Writer, Major & Principal Giving in our Mission Advancement department! This position can be home-based or located at our National Center in Dallas, TX (Relocation is not available). Responsibilities
This role involves developing, writing, editing, and maintaining proposal templates, proposals, and personalized communications for solicitation of major gift donors. It requires persuasive writing, understanding content in depth, guiding project and budget development, and ensuring alignment with funder and organizational requirements. The Proposal Writer monitors the environment, provides updates, and responds to stakeholder inquiries to support revenue development, ensuring timely and effective revenue generation for the mission.
- Gain mastery of American Heart Association programs, initiatives, and departments to leverage knowledge for optimal results.
- Create, write, and edit proposal templates and narratives focused on compelling content to support funding needs.
- Research and collaborate with staff to craft effective copy for donor proposals and stewardship materials.
- Review and edit materials to ensure consistency with organizational messaging and branding, guiding staff in customizing templates.
- Champion proposal development processes to maximize organizational impact and align with donor capacity.
- Serve as a point of contact for funding questions, providing prompt responses and updates via MS Teams.
- Maintain boilerplate content and attachments for proposals, ensuring easy access on SharePoint.
- Keep project updates current in project management software (Asana) and utilize departmental systems for collaboration.
- Execute special projects and adapt to shifting priorities as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- 3+ years of experience; 5-8 years preferred.
- Experience in grant or proposal writing for charitable purposes, including leading proposal development; writing samples required.
- Experience in direct fundraising with individuals, foundations, or government grants.
- Non-profit grant writing, communications, marketing, journalism, or related experience.
- Strong verbal and business writing skills, with the ability to translate complex information into compelling solicitations.
- Program and budget development experience for philanthropic proposals.
- Attention to detail, organization, and prioritization skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite and collaborative tools (SharePoint, Teams).
- Flexibility, resilience, and a proactive learning attitude.
- Ability to work across departments and incorporate feedback effectively.
- Customer service orientation, collaborative mindset, and sense of urgency.
Preferred Experience
- Program development/management, logic models, or program evaluation.
- Graphic design skills.
- Understanding of the current philanthropic landscape.
