Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs Job Posting Feb. 11, 2025 The Director of Communications/Public Affairs will support the Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs (AOCDS) by communicating its values and enhancing its image to its members and the public through membership communications, public media, social media, as well as coordinating and facilitating fundraising from the public. Overall Responsibilities
Understand the objectives, policies, and communication needs of AOCDS Help communicate AOCDS’ mission by providing news and information both orally, in print, and online Help to strengthen rapport between AOCDS Board and its membership Prepare effective annual communications/public affairs plan, including content schedule, timeline, and resource requirements Plan and develop information programs to communicate AOCDS’s accomplishments and agenda to appropriate audiences, including members, community, and government agencies Assist the President and Executive Director with all media contact and member communications Develop message framework to guide communication with the community and members; includes overall key message points to solidify AOCDS’s reputation with members and in the media As directed, keep Area Representatives fully informed regarding Board communications to members and assist in their communications to members Prepare organizational communications/publications (electronic and paper) for internal and external audiences, including quarterly member newsletters and AOCDS reports Attend/monitor/speak public meetings as directed Develop and maintain a list of appropriate media contacts (TV, radio, print, online) Respond to requests for information from the media by providing timely and accurate information Write press releases to external media Attend AOCDS events and serve as liaison to the media Be available to work with a crisis team to prepare statements and field press calls when needed for critical situations. This is an exempt position and requires work after hours and on weekends as needed. Specific Communication Channels/Activities (Examples)
Internal/Member Communications
Website Advise on ways to simplify website access and usage by members. Keep website postings up to date, consistent with annual communications plan. Write articles and posts. Manage, write AOCDS’s President’s articles, with oversight by President. Member Presentations Write and produce formal (PowerPoint) presentations on member benefit changes and other important news. Board Updates - when directed Local and State Media
Press Relations Press Releases Social Media
Think out of the box to post on AOCDS social media platforms regularly. Post photos and videos from board members, as directed. Create graphics, regularly monitor comments, and stay up to date on other law enforcement posts in Orange County and across the country. Fundraising
At the direction of the Executive Director, organize and collaboratively work to develop fundraising programs as needed. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Creative, results-oriented communications professional with BA in journalism, communications, English, or related field Three-plus years’ experience in a combination of journalism and media/public affairs Excellent English language, writing, editing, and interpersonal skills Demonstrates effective knowledge of community leadership and the workings of local and state government Demonstrates effective knowledge of electronic and print media for internal and external communications Experience working with media (local and State) Ability to work as part of a team and capacity to perform effectively under pressure Solid judgment and decision making Highly proficient with Social Media platforms
