Job Description Summary
Chicago State University (CSU), is the oldest public university in the Chicago metropolitan area. Chicago State University is Illinois' only four-year U.S. Department of Education-designated Predominantly Black Institution (PBI). CSU serves over 1,500 undergraduate students and nearly 900 graduate students. The university is a nationally accredited university with five colleges in Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Health Sciences and Pharmacy and proudly supports a diverse and non-traditional student population that hails from 28 countries and 36 states.

The department offers a Bachelor of Arts in Music, Bachelor of Arts in Music Education, and Bachelor of Arts degrees with concentrations in Gospel Music or Music Production.
Primary Duties will include: Direct the CSU concert choir and chamber choir.
Teach choral methods for education majors, diction, applied voice and/or piano.
Teach additional music courses as needed.
Teaching: Faculty members are expected to teach up to 24 credit unit equivalence per year; develop syllabi, and teaching materials (ability to organize, analyze, and present knowledge or materials) related to courses taught; and collaborate with other faculty in the development of new courses and/or programs. In addition, faculty advise students, participates in professional development activities, and engages in assessment activities related to accreditation and program evaluation. The primary duties include teaching and related activities assigned during an academic year. It is expected that the faculty will support the University's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion by making teaching inclusive for students of different ethnic backgrounds, genders, and socioeconomic statuses. |
Research/Creative Activity: Faculty members are expected to engage in research and creative activity germane to the music discipline.
Service: Faculty members are expected to serve on committees, programs, and/or special task forces at the department, college, university, professional, and community levels; and assume leadership roles over time and as they increase in rank. These activities are not for compensation and have a relationship to the employee's assigned responsibilities and to the university.
All faculty positions are governed by the tenets of a collective bargaining agreement. Faculty are hired, evaluated, retained, promoted, and tenured on the basis of conditions covered in the union contract. Primary duties include teaching and related activities assigned during a 9- month year. It is expected that each faculty member engages in all three activities of teaching, research/creative activities and service.
Required Education
Doctorate in music preferred. Master's degree in music required.
A Master's degree plus an additional 30 hours of graduate course work is required for tenure.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to effectively contribute to the Department, College, and University teaching, scholarly, and service activities
Skilled in the use of information and music technology: Microsoft 365 suite, Adobe Sign.
Music software: Music notation, Audio/video recording devices.
Knowledge and use of concert sound reinforcement a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
Undergraduate level experience as a choral director.
Piano accompaniment skills for vocal lessons and choral ensemble rehearsals.
K-12 public school experience as a licensed music teacher.
While not required, candidates with experience teaching minority serving programs, experience directing Gospel music and or vocal Jazz, and experience teaching elementary or secondary music education methods and supervising music education students will be given consideration.
Special Requirements
Candidates must submit at least two short videos demonstrating choral conducting and performance in their primary instrumental or vocal area.
