Responsibilities
The Corporate Bookmaking team seeks a Production Editor to support the Random House Publishing Group and to oversee a variety of titles from manuscript to bound book. Founded in 1925, Random House is the home to award-winning, critically acclaimed, bestselling fiction and nonfiction authors, including Lee Child, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Jodi Picoult, George R. R. Martin, Emma Cline, Jon Meacham, and Deepak Chopra. The Inklore imprint is home to projects such as the Lore Olympus graphic novels, and the Under the Oak Tree novels and comics. Reporting to the Director, the Production Editor, working closely with the editorial, design, and production groups, will be responsible for handling a range of titles across the Random House breadth, including original titles (including some 4-color), from manuscript to bound book/ePub, as well as hardcover-to-paperback conversions, across many genres, from popular and literary fiction to biographies, memoirs, history, sports, self-help, cookbooks, current affairs, business, and religion. We are looking for a detail-oriented, meticulous self-starter who has strong analytical skills, communicates clearly, and will be an active participant in a collaborative team. The ideal candidate will manage a diverse set of responsibilities efficiently and effectively and is comfortable asking for help when needed. Specific responsibilities include:
- Handle production editorial work for original titles (both 1-color and 4-color) from manuscript to bound book/ePub, as well as hardcover-to-paperback conversions, across many genres, including popular and literary fiction, biography, memoir, history, sports, self-help, cooking, current affairs, business, and religion
- Hiring, for original titles, freelance copy editors, proofreaders, and indexers and reviewing their work through all passes, including clearing manuscripts post-copyediting and collating changes from authors and freelancers in page proofs
- Performing quality checks on ebook files
- Copyediting jacket/cover copy and second-format additional material, including sales quotes and reading group guides, and proofreading jackets/covers, captions, and additional material
- Electronic coding/tagging manuscripts for design and composition
- Collaborating with production, design, and managing editorial departments on and maintaining book schedules
- A minimum 3 years’ experience as a trade-book production editor
- Excellent copyediting, proofreading, and organizational skills
- A detailed familiarity with The Chicago Manualof Style, and general facility with modern copyediting style
- Ability to manage a diverse set of responsibilities efficiently and effectively
- Ability to set and meet deadlines
- Capable of rising to a challenge, and comfortable asking for help when needed
- Expertise with electronic copyediting, using Microsoft Word
- Experience with Adobe Acrobat PDF markup tools
- Preferably experience working on 4-color books
