The Baltimore Sun, an award-winning news organization, is seeking a dynamic Assistant Editor to help drive local news coverage across Baltimore City and County.
The Assistant Editor will help to drive daily coverage, guide stories from idea to final edit, and fill reporting gaps within the newsroom. This role is ideal for an emerging newsroom leader who can gracefully pivot between editing duties and original reporting, and who thrives in a fast-paced, deeply local news environment.
Essential Functions
Collaborate with editors to assign, edit, and produce daily stories focused on Baltimore City and County
Provide support to reporters, helping them deliver strong, audience-centered journalism that is fair, accurate, and engaging
Fill reporting gaps within the newsroom, covering breaking news and developing stories that matter to Baltimore City and County residents
Assist with the curation of content for The Sun’s website and apps to ensure timely, accurate coverage
Assist with the curation of hyperlocal newsletters
Uses audience analytics and news judgment to inform content decisions and engagement strategies
Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field, or equivalent experience
A minimum of 3 years of professional reporting experience (news publication and/or daily or weekly journalism experience strongly preferred)
1- 4 years of experience as an editor or producer
Prior managerial or supervisory experience is a plus
Strong knowledge of SEO best practices and digital content strategies
Demonstrated ability to work quickly and accurately within a web-based content management system
This is a full-time, in-office role based at our Baltimore, MD headquarters, working shifts that may include nights and/or weekends
Salary Range:
$65,000 - $85,000
Individual compensation may vary from the target range based on several factors such as experience, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations.
