We are looking for a Sweater Designer to join us at Cobalt Knitwear. This position is Hybrid, and candidates should be based within commutable distance to the New York City Metropolitan Area. The Sweater Designer will be responsible for designing and executing trend-appropriate design concepts for the Juniors market / customer market age range of 15-28yrs. Partnering with our Sales team to gain market knowledge to create and execute an enhanced knitwear collection for each season, from concept to delivery for major retailers and driving sales. Co-ordinating the timely execution of each stage of this process, sourcing yarn, creating and engineering novelty patterns & stitches into trend right, priced right commercial silhouettes. Collaborating with our leadership, merchandising & design teams across the globe. They will also be expected to maintain a strong relationship and dialogue with our customers in daily communications.
Strategy & Innovation
Identify global emerging trends in stitch/pattern/yarn/silhouette and provide directional seasonally trend appropriate concepts for Junior retailers.
Attend trade shows and trend shows in New York City to work with established partner mills to develop yarn
Shop the US market for Junior inspiration as well as partner with Asia & UK team for newness to create data analytics.
Perform competitive analysis and pull design concepts, presentation boards for meetings, mock-ups, 3D CADs, AI mock-ups and inspirational photos, to Present to Senior management.
Research and Development of seasonal yarn palettes for Junior market providing direction to our Asia Counterparts to source and develop new yarns both core and novelty for all accounts.
Design and execute development of specific customer yarn & knit-down requests.
Partner with customers to provide top yarn info and direction for Account specific presentations.
Execute development of seasonal sweater design and cost engineer each sweater customized for the customer.
Operations & Results Design according to style plans, sales needs and emerging trends.
Ensure timely execution of product development calendar.
Create illustrator sketches, review specification sheets and line sheets and ensure accuracy of product development logs, line sheets, boards and design archives library.
Select and review raw materials and trims and ensure maintenance of yarn, various gauge stitch libraries, fabric and trim library.
Work with Asia Counterparts to approve lab dips, Knit-downs and ensure consistency with color standards, where appropriate.
Customers and Relationships Co-ordinate follow-up with internal and external customers and partners, including technical design, oversea design, sales, production and vendors.
Manage interoffice communication.
Build collaborative relationships with vendors and internal customers.
Collaborate with Sales and Senior Management in presenting, designing and following up for Accounts.
Maintain strong relationships with yarn mills to source and develop new yarns for all Accounts.
Skills 5+ years of experience in sweater design
Research Expert
Strong illustration skills
Proficient in creating Tech Packages
Strong multi-tasking skills
Good yarn knowledge and familiar with the whole sweater development process
Concept creation
Familiar with design software, e.g. Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Ai platforms, Canva, Miro, PLM etc.
Ability to lead and mentor an associate/assistant.
Strong project management skills and ability to manage the whole design process for multiple projects
Good communication and presentation skills for handling internal and external clients

Compensation/Benefits: The approximate annual base salary range for this position is $85,000.00 - $100,000.00. The offered salary or salary range for this position will vary based on role requirements, skill set and years of experience.
