San Diego Foundation is seeking an experienced, mission driven individual to temporarily cover the responsibilities of a Grant Writer for a 6-month, part-time position while our current employee takes parental leave. This position will work in coordination with the Sr. Director, Strategic Initiatives to identify, cultivate and solicit resources to support San Diego Foundation’s Strategic Initiatives.
The Grant Writer is responsible for researching, identifying, and securing government, corporate, private foundation, and other donor funding to support San Diego Foundation’s Strategic Plan. Reporting to the Sr. Director of Development, Strategic Initiatives, the Grant Writer will be responsible for conducting the full range of activities required to research, write, prepare, submit, and report on grant proposals to foundations, corporations, government, and other grant- making organizations and individuals. The Grant Writer is also responsible for identifying new grant funding sources for SDF programs and projects and supporting donor cultivation and stewardship.
This is a hybrid role with weekly onsite requirements at our San Diego Headquarter Office in Liberty Station.
Note: This is a temporary, part-time position for approximately 6 months.
Essential Responsibilities:
Grant Development & Proposal Management
- Research, prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals for federal, state, and local governments, corporate and private foundations, and other funders.
- Ensure proposals comply with funding guidelines, demonstrate strong program design, and present a compelling need for financial support.
Grant Process Coordination & Compliance
- Ensure a seamless and timely process for all grant-related tasks, including letters of inquiry, proposals, reports, and stewardship activities.
- Manage contract compliance and file maintenance, including tracking all grants, compliance needs, re-application schedules, and reporting deadlines.
Cross-Departmental Collaboration & Reporting
- Interface with program staff, finance team, and communications team to assess program needs and gather required information for applications, proposals, and budgets.
- Collaborate with program, finance, communications, and other colleagues to compile impact reports for funders and report on grant deliverables.
Data & Record Management
- Ensure the accuracy and integrity of grant records maintained and tracked in Raiser's Edge.
Requirements
- 3 - 5 years of experience as a grant writer with a proven record of accomplishment of securing foundation, corporate, government, and private donor grants. Knowledge of the San Diego and California funding landscape is preferred.
- Passion for the work and mission of San Diego Foundation to inspire enduring philanthropy and enable community solutions to improve the quality of life in our region. Demonstrated commitment to racial equity and social justice.
- Knowledge of how to research, identify, and match funding resources to meet specific needs.
- Exceptional communicator with the ability to present concepts and strategic objectives in clear, concise, and fundable grant proposals.
- The ability to articulate how your work and grant funds improve or improve the communities we serve.
- Proven ability to present, articulate, and inspire potential donors and grantors with our work, community impact, and vision to support proposals.
- Must be able to work under pressure, use independent judgment, and produce a quality product within tight time constraints.
- Excellent interpersonal skills: ability to establish and work with colleagues in different departments both remotely and in-person.
- Demonstrated competence in working effectively with individuals from diverse educational and/or cultural backgrounds.
- Proficient computer skills, especially in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word; familiarity with Raisers Edge or equivalent donor database is also preferred.
- Ability to handle confidential matters with the utmost integrity.
- Must live in San Diego County
Language Skills:
- Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently

Benefits
- Hourly, Nonexempt, Temporary, Part-Time: $40.00-$45.00 per hour, 20-25 hours per week expected (San Diego Foundation is committed to practices that promote pay equity and transparency.
