Position Summary: The Humanities Department/Program in Literature and Languages seeks a part-time instructor to teach an undergraduate course: ENG 205: Shakespeare in Context. The instructor hired will have some flexibility in determining the focus of the course, including the plays chosen to analyze. Overall, Shakespeare in Context is a course designed to introduce students to the work of William Shakespeare and some of his contemporaries, competitors, and collaborators. Attention is given to early modern depictions of racial, ethnic, and gender-based stereotypes, biases, and conflicts. Discussions also focus on issues such as the likely literary and historical sources of the work, the cultural and political background informing the plot and characters, and their original staging. The plays’ subsequent performance histories (including cinematic interpretations) are also introduced.
