Position Summary
The Production Music Director is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing all musical elements of youth musical theatre productions. Working in collaboration with the Director and the broader production team, the Music Director plays a pivotal role in shaping the musical aspects of the production. This position requires a seasoned professional with a strong background in music and education, dedicated to fostering a love for musical theatre in young performers.
Musical Arrangements:
- Arrange and oversee the musical elements of the production, including vocal arrangements and sound track.
- Collaborate with the Director to ensure musical choices align with the overall artistic vision.
Vocal Training:
- Provide vocal training to performers, ensuring that they meet the musical requirements of their roles.
- Collaborate with the Assistant Director to support actors in their character development through music.
- Conduct music rehearsals, ensuring that performers are well-prepared and confident in their musical performances.
- Collaborate with the Stage Manager to manage the rehearsal schedule.
Collaboration with Production Team:
- Work closely with the Director and broader production team to ensure a cohesive and well-integrated production.
- Provide musical expertise and insights to enhance the overall quality of the production.
Qualifications
Musical Expertise:
- Extensive experience in musical direction, preferably in youth theatre productions.
- Strong understanding of vocal techniques, orchestration, and musical arrangement.
Teaching and Leadership Skills:
- Ability to effectively teach and inspire young performers in the musical aspects of their roles.
- Strong leadership skills to manage a musical team and coordinate with other production staff.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills to work effectively with the creative team.
- Ability to adapt musical arrangements to suit the capabilities of young performers.
Passion for Musical Theatre:
- Genuine enthusiasm for nurturing a love for musical theatre in young performers.
- Understanding of the transformative power of music in theatrical productions.
Availability
Must be available to attend rehearsal and production meetings. Most productions rehearse three times per week – two weekday evenings and Saturday. Rehearsal times are typically on Monday through Friday between 5:00-9:00 p.m. and Saturdays between 12:00-9:00 p.m.
