Job Title: Adult Reference Librarian (Part-time)
Hours: (17) hours per week (Tue, 3pm – 8pm/Th, 9am – 2pm/Fri, 10am – 5pm, Saturdays on rotation)
Union Affiliation: Professionals (Non-Union)
Starting Salary: $29.25/per hour
Function: The position is responsible for providing informational library services to patrons. Duties include reference work and reader's advisory services, materials review, interlibrary loan, preparing library for opening and closing, creating displays, collection development, programming, and maintenance of various files and collections as well as promoting library use. This position is a primarily public-facing position. This position is also responsible for any other duties assigned by the department head.
Typical Duties, Responsibilities, Tasks and Assignments:
- Provides reference and reader’s advisory services, instructs patrons in the use of library resources, including the online catalog, downloadable library materials, subscription databases, and other online programs.
- Reviews materials for selection and acquisition and makes recommendations for the purchase or deletion of library materials.
- Develops and presents a wide range of library programming.
- Prepares and distributes public relations and information materials relative to the activities of the adult section of the library.
- Organizes and maintains assigned collections.
- Attends staff meetings and professional development training.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Special Skills and Requirements:
A Master’s Degree in Library Science is required, and two years of professional librarian experience is preferred. Excellent knowledge of the principles and practices of public library functions. Considerable knowledge of the needs of library patrons of all ages and the ability to provide the type and level of service needed. Excellent knowledge of reference tools and procedures. Considerable ability in oral and written communications. Ability to plan and work independently and collaboratively with all library staff.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to obtain and replace books from shelving in the stacks and on all levels, walking and standing for extended time periods and carrying a reasonable selection of materials between places where they are stored and places where they are used within the building. Ability to work with equipment associated with a library, including step stools, ladders and book trucks that occasionally may weigh in excess of 100 lbs. Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.
