Broadcast Engineer
About the Opportunity
The University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Division of Media Properties seeks a Broadcast Engineer to join our team. The Broadcast Engineer is responsible for assisting the engineering team with installation, operation, and maintenance of all WUFT/WRUF broadcast equipment including but not limited to RF systems in accordance with federal, state, local, and university rules and regulations at all transmitter sites as well as Weimer Hall. They should understand analog, digital, and IP-based systems and be able to integrate new technology and upgrades into the existing infrastructure as technology advances. The Broadcast Engineer is part of the Technology Advancement Group (TAG) and will support technical and engineering needs with the team managing both the television and radio stations infrastructure and technology. The engineer will report to the Assistant Director of Engineering and Facilities.
Key Position Functions
- Assist with installation and maintenance of television and radio broadcast equipment and systems both on and off site. Assist with troubleshooting studio and control room problems.
- Work with other TAG personnel on the installation and maintenance of IT-related hardware and software.
- Perform weekly readings and maintain high power broadcast television and radio transmitters and microwave transmitters, receivers and antennas to comply with Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations. Monitor and work with vendors to repair all tower lighting equipment located at all transmitter sites per FAA Rules and Regulations.
- Maintain accurate records of changes or repairs made to equipment. Submit all receipts and invoices to the business office for payment. Assist with yearly budget of broadcast equipment.
- Document and maintain all broadcast systems.
- This is an essential personnel position, which requires an employee to report to work, be “on call” to report to work, and/or work remotely if required in order to maintain the critical functions of the college and/or university.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Must have a valid driver's license and ability to travel to remote broadcast transmission sites.
- Experience in the broadcast industry. Ability to troubleshoot hardware and software issues. Understanding of IP based equipment (video and audio). Enjoys working with new technologies in the broadcast industry.
- Demonstrated ability to work constructively with colleagues and deliver results with high standards. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to work well with diverse personalities and varying levels of engineering and technological knowledge/experience.
- Ability to be on call 24/7/365.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and must be able to climb ladders and crawl on floors in order to access broadcast equipment and systems.
