Job Summary
NOTE: This is a hybrid position and must be able to report to New Albany, OH , Roanoke, VA , Tulsa, OK.
Proficient in performing high level design work with minimal supervision. Able to accomplish complex and large scope projects efficiently, effectively while meeting key dates. Works collaboratively with Principal designers and leadership to drive continuous improvement. Proficient level work activities to be performed include computer aided drafting to prepare and maintain maps, sketches, schematics, and other engineering related drawings. Work activities to be performed include preparation of drawing packages, engineering drawings, optimizing layouts, design development, designs for quotes, check drawings, peer review of all deliverables and work activities, creating a positive impact across the department, as well as performing other design and engineering work as defined or directed.
Job Description
Plan and coordinate daily work routines as required to maintain efficient production.
Create, revise, and maintain detailed engineering and record drawings, and sketches.
Create, revise, and maintain material and property equipment records.
Obtain information required to perform work from verbal communication, sketches, marked drawings, listings, field notes, vendors' catalogs technical reference manuals and site visits.
Prepare and influence study layouts, designs, and original working drawings in accordance with AEP standard practice.
Check manufacturers' prints and shop drawings to ensure feasibility of designs and other drawings necessary to coordinate work with that of others and with the overall design.
Check designs for strength, conformity, constructability, and compliance to accepted standards and methods.
Develop best practices in coordination with organizations in the company to assure that work is performed in a safe and efficient manner.
Subject Matter Expert (SME) and advocate for improvements in all required software including computer aided design software.
Specify and write purchase requisitions in addition to checking and submitting bill of materials.
Provide direction and mentor in the training of employees in related work at an equal or lower level as directed.
Support employees of higher classification when directed.
Team training and development of CAD practices, 3D designs, documentation, drawing deliverables, design methods, subject matter expert roles, and culture.
Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the use of Microsoft Office software.
Support and review QAQC work performed by other personnel as directed for accuracy and compliance with all Company standards and methods.
Promote and support the Company's Accident Prevention and Safety and Health programs.
Demonstrate ethical behavior as outlined in the AEP corporate policies.
Lead the team in support the AEP Corporate Compliance policies.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
DESIGNER SPECIALIST(GRADE 6)
Associate degree in applied science (AAS) in drafting and computer aided design (CAD) or in civil, electrical, or mechanical engineering technology and 6 years of equivalent experience OR high school diploma/GED and 8 years of experience in electric utility and/or related industrial drafting and/or computer aided drafting work.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
DESIGNER PRIN(GRADE 7)
Education requirements are listed below:Associate degree in applied science (AAS) in drafting and design computer aided design (CAD) or in civil, electrical or mechanical engineering technology and a minimum of 7 years of equivalent experience.Equivalent experience without AAS degree - high school graduate and 10 years of experience in electric utility and/or related industrial drafting and/or computer aided drafting work.
Other Requirements:
Must be proficient in working with conventional drafting symbols and drafting methods and have the ability to distinguish colors.
Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.
Must meet all vehicle operation requirements as designated by federal and/or state law.
May require shift work or overtime. Occasional overnight travel to and work within a substation or power plant environment in obedience to all safety regulations and use of personal protection equipment.

DESIGNER SPECIALIST(GRADE 6) - $70,961 - $88,700.50
DESIGNER PRIN(GRADE 7)- $83,413-$104,268
