Position PurposeThe media specialist provides instructional leadership for the teaching of information literacy skills, develops and maintains a school library collection that has up-to-date digital and print materials and technology, including curation of openly licensed educational resources, and manages the school library as a flexible, multi-tasked learning environment. Collaborates with school faculty and administrators to develop a program that supports the instructional curriculum.Essential FunctionsThis position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge or skills associated with the duties and roles of the media specialist.Teach the skills of information location, access, evaluation, media literacy, copyright, fair use and other initiatives identified by the Curriculum and Instruction department.Actively promote reading and the development of good reading habits.Maintain the school library’s print, non-print, and electronic collections, and manage circulation of curricular support materials and equipment.Collaborate with teachers in planning assignments and providing instruction that supports the development of digital learning, participatory learning, inquiry learning, technology literacies, and information literacy.Use National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, School Libraries and the curriculum of the district to plan daily instructional activities.Perform collection development by selecting, ordering, and adding new items to replace and/or update school library resources.Introduce new instructional materials and technologies to staff.Supervise library assistants and volunteers in the school library.Plan and direct special projects that support, supplement, and elevate the literacy experience through guidance and motivational reading initiatives.Prepare or assist in preparation of the school library budget.Demonstrate commitment to improving professional competence.Assess student learning on an ongoing basis and alter instruction to meet group/individual needs.Provide support for staff and students computing devices.Generate reports as related to circulation of library materials and budgetary procedures.Prepare reports as requested by building principal and/or district leadership.Perform other duties as assigned.Note:

It is not meant to be all inclusive of every task or responsibility.Additional DutiesPerforms other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.EquipmentUses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.Travel RequirementsTravels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.Knowledge, Skills And AbilitiesThorough knowledge of professional library principles, materials and practices.Thorough knowledge of prescribed school system policies and procedures.Ability to evaluate library programs and services and to develop improved methods.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and staff.Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.Physical and Mental Demands, Work HazardsWorks in standard office and school building environments.Certification/LicenseVirginia Teaching License with an endorsement in Library-Media K-12.EducationBachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.ExperienceSuccessful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.Terms Of EmploymentSalary Range: $55,141 - $90,122 ($2,944 Additional for Master’s Degree)Contract: 10 MonthsBenefits: Employer Portion Paid Retirement, Life Insurance, Contribution to Medical Insurance, Personal and Sick LeaveFLSA Status:
