Job Description
DUTIES
- Select and play appropriate sacred music for all English Masses and other liturgical and non-liturgical celebrations.
- Assure all parish liturgical celebrations have assigned organists, cantors, special musicians, and choirs, as appropriate.
- Promote and direct an adult choir to include weekly practices and special rehearsals as needed.
- Promote and direct a children’s choir to include weekly practices and special rehearsals, as needed.
- Identify, train and attend to the continuing musical development of cantors
- Support, communicate with and, when necessary, meet with the coordinators of Spanish Music Ministry and any other music groups to assure quality and continuity in overall music program.
- Oversee input of music information in computer for all Church liturgies utilizing screens.
- Prepare all music for liturgies in a timely manner (print, sort, organize and distribute to musicians)
- Set and adjust audio system as necessary for optimum sound in Church.
- Maintain professional competence through regular music practice.
- Collaborates with other Music Directors and outside contacts to facilitate new ideas and overall improvement.
- Works with staff to coordinate bulletin announcements, publicity, etc.
- Attend meetings, conferences and workshops for pastoral musicians, as possible.
- Plan, coordinate and conduct at least three fundraising concerts annually to benefit the parish or Catholic Faith Appeal.
- Attend parish staff meetings and Liturgy Committee meetings, at which music selections are presented.
- Implement a healthy diversity of hymns and Mass settings appropriate to particular seasons/liturgies/congregations.
- Coordinate music for weddings and funerals, including meetings if necessary, and arrange for organists/vocalists accordingly.
- Prepare annual Music program budget and administer the expenditures of approved items.
- Establish and maintain a fully stocked and legal music library.
- Attend to proper music licensing and fees and professional organization memberships.
- Purchase and maintain music equipment and instruments.
- Maintain music room in good order.
- Foster a sense of the sacred at liturgies, discouraging applause and encouraging a spirit of prayerfulness.
- Encourage, enhance and facilitate strong assembly participation.
- Seasonally evaluate the music program and consult with the pastor on needed changes/adjustments.
TIME COMMITMENT
38.5 hours per week and as necessary to cover weekend Masses, Holy Days, Triduum, Stations of the Cross, Thanksgiving Day, Penance Services, First Communion, Confirmation, missions, special events, choir rehearsals, meetings, and any additional commitments, as required by the pastor.

Experience and education
- Master’s degree in Music preferred.
- Experience in a Catholic Church setting.
- Accomplished organist/pianist.
- Experience in musical direction.
- Keen understanding of music and the liturgy.
- Music program and event planning skills.
- Ability to run fundraising concerts in compliance with Church/diocesan policies and guidelines.
EVALUATION
Annually
Additional conferrals with pastor/administrator, as needed.
