The current vacancy is in the Adult Services division. This position works a rotating Monday-Friday, and Tuesday-Saturday schedule, including occasional evenings . Candidates who are successful in the testing process will be placed on an eligibility list. This list may be used to fill future vacancies in other divisions of the library.

GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general direction of the Senior Librarian, performs professional library services in one or more assigned areas of the Library. Major duties include reference work; reader's advisory; collection development; programs and events for all ages; and supporting library patrons in the use of library materials, technology and library services; and performs related duties as required.

- Develops, organizes, implements, and oversees programs, events, and services for assigned library division; prepares publication/promotion materials, program materials, and social media messages.
- Provides assistance to patrons with reference and reader's advisory services; use of library services and materials; interprets library catalog information to the public; assists patrons with use of library databases, the Internet and software for library services.
- Prepares and maintains accurate reports; maintains statistical records and keeps statistics for library programs and services; monthly and annual reports; and analysis and statistics as needed.
- Researches, analyzes, recommends, and selects new books and materials; catalogs and classifies materials; determines items that need binding, replacement or removal from collection; organizes, collects, indexes and maintains materials for specialized collections.
- Researches, applies and manages grants; monitors and oversees division/area budget for assigned collection;
- Prepares, organizes, and conducts class visits, story times and outreach; attends, participates, and represents the library in meetings with other public agencies, community groups, and public; prepares and presents library programs and services to various groups; establishes and maintains positive working relationships with community partnerships, community organizations, City staff and the public.
- Assists with supervision and training of staff assigned to division/area; assigns and oversees workflow of technical and support staff, special program workers and volunteers.
- Attends and participates in workshops, seminars, conferences and training programs related to library services; stays current on issues relative to the field of library services and programs.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
Education/Experience/Training:
- Master's Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited college or university is required.
- One year of experience in public library services is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of theories, principles, and techniques of professional library work; reference sources including electronic formats; current authors, titles, and readership interest levels; methods, rules and procedures involved in the classification and cataloging of materials.
Ability to interpret and determine patron needs; locate desired resources; use independent judgement; communicate effectively both orally in one-on-one situations, in front of groups, and in writing; supervise and direct the activities of assigned staff; assess community needs, popular interests, and social trends through direct and anecdotal methods; establish and maintain effective working relationships with people of different backgrounds, varying degrees of English expertise and different age groups.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Possession of valid Class C California Driver's License.

Physical Demands: Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, climbing, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position requires finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination to operate computer hardware and standard office equipment and reach with hands and arms above and below shoulder level. The employee occasionally lifts, pulls, and carries records, documents and books typically weighing up to 20 pounds; and pushes or pulls book carts weighing up to 200 pounds. Additionally, sensory demands include the ability to talk and hear. The position requires near and far vision and ability to adjust focus in reading written materials and work-related documents. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service. Ability to respond quickly to the scene of an accident/incident and to identify safety hazards in the workplace.
Mental Demands: While performing the duties of this class, the employee must be able to use written and oral communication skills; read, analyze, and interpret data, materials, and documents; prepare and evaluate reports; use math and mathematical reasoning; learn and apply new information or new skills; and interact with City staff, community members and the public.
Work Environment: The employee works in an office environment with controlled temperature settings. The employee may need to be in outside elements for special events, programs, and other related job duties.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
NOTE:New hire candidates must show proof of full Covid vaccinations prior to being hired.

Following is a summary of the provided benefits. For further information, refer to the unit's Salary Resolution or Memorandum of Understanding.
- HOLIDAYS: 116 hours of paid holidays per year.
- VACATION: 80 hours of vacation each year plus eight additional hours for each year served beginning with the employee's sixth anniversary to a maximum of 200 hours per year.
- SICK LEAVE: 96 hours of sick leave. Cash out and reimbursement options are available with restrictions. Automatic enrollment in catastrophic leave bank.
- MEDICAL INSURANCE: The City contributes up to $1,450/mo toward medical insurance for employees, eligible dependents and retirees. Employees have a variety of medical insurance plans to choose from. Those who waive City-paid medical coverage & present proof of insurance in a non-City employee's health insurance plan will receive $300/mo. cash in lieu.
- DENTAL INSURANCE: The City contributes up to $100/mo toward dental insurance for the employee & eligible dependents.
- VISION INSURANCE: The City contributes up to $30/mo toward vision insurance for employee and eligible dependents.
- LIFE INSURANCE: The City provides a $100,000 life insurance policy. Additional life insurance is available.
- LONG TERM DISABILITY INSURANCE: The City pays the premium for long-term disability insurance for the employee.
- RETIREMENT: Employees are covered by the Public Employees' Retirement System at, 2.7%@55 (Classic), single highest year or 2%@62 (PEPRA), three average years, as determined by PEPRA. Classic members pay the full 8% and new members pay 7.25% of the employee contribution. The City does not participate in the Social Security System, except for the mandatory 1.45% Medicare contribution.
- EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: Regular, full-time employees are eligible for participation in the Employee Assistance Program that provides confidential counseling and consultation services for family, stress, financial and legal issues.
- MEDICARE: Employees pay the mandatory 1.45% contribution.
- CREDIT UNION: F & A Credit Union is available to employees.
- DEFERRED COMPENSATION: Available to all employees who wish to participate. The City contributes up to $50 per pay period for enrolled employees.
- BILINGUAL PAY: $50.00/month for the ability to speak a qualified second language. An additional $100.00/month available for the ability to translate documents in a qualified second language.
- TUITION REIMBURSEMENT: Those who have passed probation are eligible for reimbursement up to $3,500 annually for approved courses & books at Cal-State LA University tuition rates.
