The Position
Senior Library Assistant (Part-Time)

The Ontario City Library has an exciting opportunity for a motivated and team-oriented individual who is interested in creating a positive user experience. The part-time Senior Library Assistant provides excellent customer service and is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the daily operations of a section of the library. The Senior Library Assistant is also expected to establish and maintain good relationships with other library units, city agencies, and community groups.
The ideal candidate possesses a professional demeanor, leadership skills, oral and written communication skills, is organized, and enjoys engaging with members of the community. Experience working with volunteers and non-profit fundraising groups is highly desirable. Additionally, the successful candidate will embody the Ontario City Library's Mission, Vision and Values as well as the qualities of a "Five Tool Player" - Leader, Thinker, Communicator, Operator and Public Servant - and the principles of the City's Customer Service Philosophy - Empathy, Respect, and Problem Solving.
The Senior Library Assistant is a paid, part-time/temporary position scheduled to work no more than 29 hours per week and is not eligible to participate in the City's health insurance or retirement plans. The typical work schedule for this position may include 19-29 hours per week.
The following procedures will apply:

The Ontario City Library has been serving the public as a City department since 1894. The Ovitt Family Community Library and Lewis Family Branches of the Library contain over 315,000 items, including books, magazines, newspapers, DVDs, audio books, kits and a local history collection. A wide variety of technology is available for the public including internet, several software, eBooks, and state of the art technology through Lightspeed makerspace that offers access to equipment such as 3D printers and a laser cutter. The Library offers a wide variety of programs and services for all ages including early literacy, Veterans Resource Center, adult literacy tutoring, workforce development training, and the Robert E. Ellingwood Model Colony History Room.

Examples of Essential Functions
The essential functions typically performed by the Senior Library Assistant include the following:
- Oversees and directs the activities of clerical and paraprofessional staff and volunteers including scheduling and evaluation.
- Provides reader's advisory and reference services to adults and children.
- Prepares reports, records, and other materials as necessary.
- Formulates promotional material for the library.
- Performs manual and automated bibliographic searches for materials.
- Assists in planning and conducting library programs and library tours.
- Assists in selecting, ordering, and distributing office supplies and library materials.
- Receives, verifies, and prepares invoices for payment.
- Provides inter-library loan services.
- Assists with tabulating receipts and maintaining accounting records as needed.
Education
Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Library Science or a related field. Two additional years of qualifying experience as described above in a public library may be substituted for the educational requirement of this position.

Experience

Desirable
- Experience working with non-profit groups such as Friends of the Library or similar fundraising group.
- Experience working with, and supervising, volunteers.
- Experience working in a bookstore setting.
- Ability to read, write, and speak Spanish.
A valid California Class C driver's license and an applicable driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment.
Special Requirements
