The successful candidate will work under the mentorship of Dr. Todd Newman, with Erik Badertscher as the primary contact. The position entails a diverse set of responsibilities, including stakeholder engagement, survey research, workshop facilitation, and the development of communication strategies. You will design and conduct comprehensive surveys to assess the communication needs of coastal stakeholders, engage directly with local leaders and organizations, and co-create research questions and communication goals. The role also involves organizing multi-stakeholder workshops with representatives from the insurance industry, federal agencies, real estate, emergency management, policymakers, and coastal planners. Synthesizing workshop outcomes into actionable strategies, developing accessible communication products, and integrating decision-making science into communication design are key components of this project. The postdoctoral scholar will also conduct literature reviews, analyze qualitative and quantitative data, and publish findings on effective climate science communication strategies.

Candidate Profile

This position is ideally suited for candidates with the following qualifications:

Required

– Ph.D. in Science Communication, Psychology, Sociology, Public Policy, Environmental Communication, or a related field

– Strong mixed-methods research background, including survey design and analysis

– Experience in stakeholder engagement or community-based participatory research

– Knowledge of science communication theory and practice

– Excellent written and oral communication skills

– Ability to work effectively with diverse communities and stakeholders

– Proficiency in both qualitative and quantitative data analysis

Preferred

– Experience in climate change or environmental risk communication

– Knowledge of decision-making science and behavioral psychology

– Workshop facilitation and event management experience

– Experience working with underserved or marginalized communities

– Familiarity with coastal communities and climate adaptation issues

– A strong publication record in science communication or related fields
