Overview
The Virginia Tourism Corporation (VTC) is seeking a Communications Manager to provide key support and assistance to the Communications department in planning and implementing a high impact earned media strategy. The qualified candidate will execute VTCs earned media strategy as directed by the Director of Communications and will work with a dynamic team to achieve VTCs overall marketing goals and objectives.
Responsibilities:
- Respond to media inquiries and image fulfilment requests
- Provide research and information for media outreach and pitches
- Build relationships with journalists and other members of the press
- Write and/or edit PR materials as needed, included but not limited to talking points, accolades, press releases, pitches, media profile sheets, etc.
- Build and update media and industry lists
- Track media interactions and report on earned media coverage
- Curate daily news clips and send to key stakeholders and staff
- Send out PR leads to industry partners
- Assist with logistics and experiences for press visits and familiarization tours
- Assist with Virginia-based media events, such as press conferences, media lunches, etc.
- Represent VTC at relevant conferences, media marketplaces, and media deskside appointments as requested
- Assist Director of Communications with public affairs communication efforts
- Coordinate with VTCs Procurement department for invoicing and contracts
Skills:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong editing and proofreading skills
- Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
- Experience in curating detailed but easily understood reports
- Experience with usage of media database management tools such as Cision or Muck Rack preferred
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships, both internally and externally
- Ability to think both creatively and strategically
- Strong collaborator, working well in a team environment while also able to function as an individual contributor with self-direction and accountability
- Strong time management skills, deadline-oriented and efficient
Experience:
- 5+ years prior experience in public relations, media relations, communications, marketing, journalism, or public affairs required
- Background or general interest in travel and tourism essential
- Knowledge of Virginias tourism destinations and products preferred, but not required
