Description
LAC Federal is seeking a Library Technician to provide accessioning and receiving, maintenance, preservation, and inventory services to support standard operations of a large national library. The Library Technician must have foreign language proficiency, experience working with collections in a large library, and demonstrated experience providing proper care and handling of library materials. The Library Technician must possess knowledge and understanding of an Integrated Library System (ILS) such as Voyager and must have the ability to perform routine/repetitive work with attention to detail.
Responsibilities
- Accession monographic and serial collection items in all formats in the ILS.
- Use an ILS and other online resources to identify information on collection items.
- Perform end-stage processing of materials checked-in or cataloged by other Library divisions.
- Identify duplicates or superseded materials.
- Respond to inquiries regarding workflows or location of materials from staff and contractors.
- Open boxes to confirm contents against packing lists. Sort contents by content type, language, and/or source country based on instructions provided by section heads.
- Maintain the collections by supporting inventory control and overall security of the collection.
- Work with staff to resolve issues which prevent appropriate updating or receipts, identifying items to be claimed or replaced by staff.
- Retrieve and deliver collection material from other library divisions/sections.
- Provide inventory control by creating or updating item and holdings records in the ILS.
- Create Initial Bibliographic Control (IBC) records in the ILS.
- Update vendor-provided acquisitions records to IBC standards including adding LCCNs and barcodes.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and a minimum of two (2) years of applicable professional experience.
- Proven ability to maintain the security, proper handling, and accountability of collections in accordance with federal contract standards and requirements.
- A minimum of six (6) months of experience working in a large-scale library environment containing more than 500,000 volumes, with demonstrated competence in performing at least one of the primary duties associated with this position.
- Foreign language proficiency in at least one language from any of the major language families, including but not limited to: African, Latin American, Western European, Asian, Middle Eastern, Germanic, Slavic, or Austronesian.
Physical Requirements
- Capable of physical exertion, such as long periods of standing, walking, recurring bending, lifting, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities.
- Be able to lift up to 44lbs and push book trucks weighing up to 400lbs.
