Position Summary
The Executive Director of Communications is responsible for leading the development and execution of a comprehensive communications, marketing, and public engagement strategy that elevates the district’s brand, fosters transparency, and strengthens community trust. This role oversees all external and internal communications, including the management of the district’s website, social media platforms, and key publications such as the Student-Parent handbook and promotional materials.
Serving as the district’s brand ambassador, the Executive Director ensures consistent, impactful messaging across all channels and leads efforts to effectively communicate the district’s mission, programs, and priorities to a diverse range of stakeholders. The position also plays a central role in organizing public forums and engagement initiatives that promote open dialogue between the district and its community.
Salary Range
$80,400-$122,235

Strategic Communications & Public Engagement
Oversee the management and continuous enhancement of the district’s website and all social media platforms, ensuring alignment with brand standards and timely dissemination of key information. Provide guidance and support to direct run schools in maintaining and updating school websites Lead the development and production of district communications materials, including but not limited to the Student-Parent Handbook, promotional brochures, informational videos, and other strategic publications Design, coordinate, and facilitate comprehensive public engagement initiatives, including district-wide forums and community meetings that foster transparency, trust, and collaboration with stakeholders Effectively communicate complex and essential information through polished presentations to both small and large audiences, including internal staff, community partners, and diverse stakeholder groups
Leadership & Brand Management
Serve as the district’s internal and external brand ambassador, championing its mission, vision, and values across all platforms and interactions Manage multiple high-impact projects simultaneously, balancing strategic objectives with operational execution under tight deadlines
Strategy Development & Planning
Develop and execute an integrated communications and marketing strategy encompassing internal and external messaging, digital and print media, social platforms, and both inbound and outbound outreach efforts Maintain a dynamic, best-in-class online presence through the continual improvement of the district’s public-facing website and digital channels Plan, implement, and lead a comprehensive communications, and advertising program that enhances the district’s image, promotes awareness of its impact, and builds strong community support for its programs, services, and initiatives
Educational Background
Master’s degree strongly preferred in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field Minimum of 7+ years of experience in media relations, public affairs, or strategic communications, preferably within a public sector, K-12 education, or governmental communication Possess or willing to obtain an accreditation in Public Relations (APR)
Other Knowledge, Skills Or Abilities Required
Deep commitment to establishing NOLA-PS as an effective and responsive regulator of public education in New Orleans Strong organizational skills that reflect the ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail Comprehensive understanding of strategic communications, public relations, media relations, and crisis communication in a complex, high-profile organization In-depth knowledge of public education systems, governance structures, and the political and community dynamics that influence them Expertise in brand management and reputation-building across traditional and digital platforms Strong knowledge of stakeholder engagement strategies and inclusive communications practices that serve diverse populations Familiarity with laws and ethical standards governing public information, including the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), FERPA, and public records compliance Exceptional leadership and people management skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional teams and mentor high-performing professionals Superior verbal, written, and visual communication skills, with a proven ability to convey complex ideas to varied audiences with clarity and impact Strategic thinking and planning skills, with a results-oriented approach to aligning communication initiatives with organizational goals Advanced skills in crisis management, media relations, and navigating sensitive or high-risk situations with confidence and professionalism Proficiency in using digital communication tools and platforms (e.g., content management systems, email marketing platforms, analytics tools, social media schedulers) Ability to build trust and collaborate effectively with executive leadership, board members, school leaders, media representatives, and community stakeholders Ability to influence and shape public perception through strategic messaging and storytelling Ability to anticipate communication challenges and proactively develop strategies to address them Ability to uphold the district’s values and brand identity in all internal and external communications Ability to maintain composure, exercise discretion, and make sound decisions under pressure, particularly in high-stakes or crisis situations Ability to champion equity, access, and inclusion through culturally responsive communication practices

Performance Evaluation
The employee will be evaluated based on the above position using either two methods: via COMPASS or a NOLA-PS evaluating instrument. If the employee holds an Educational Leadership certification, he/she will be evaluated via COMPASS to ensure renewal of certification.
