Job Description
The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) invites applications for our next Director of the Savitt Medical Library! At UNR Med, we are dedicated to advancing healthcare through education, research, and community service. Our mission is to improve the health and well-being of all Nevadans and their communities through excellence in medical education, clinical care, and research. As part of our commitment to innovation and excellence, we are seeking a dynamic leader to join our team as the Savitt Medical Library Director. This position reports to the Senior Associate Dean, Institutional and Faculty Affairs at UNR Med and the Dean of UNR Libraries. The two units work in close collaboration to build a stronger campus-wide library system.
The Director will oversee all aspects of library operations, including collection development, information services, technology integration, strategic planning, budget administration, personnel management, policy formulation, facilities planning, and user experience enhancement. The Director will collaborate with faculty, staff, students, and strategic partners to promote evidence-based practice, information literacy, scholarly communication, and research support services. Additionally, the Director will cultivate partnerships with external stakeholders to enhance resources and services offered by the library. The Director oversees five library faculty members and four staff members.
The Savitt Medical Library supports the students, residents, fellows, faculty and staff in the following programs: Medical Education, Graduate Medical Education, Nursing, Physician Assistant, Sanford Center for Aging, and Speech Pathology & Audiology.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and direction for the Savitt Medical Library in alignment with UNR Med's mission and values.
- Oversee the development and management of the library's collections, including print and electronic resources, to support the educational, clinical, and research needs of students, residents, fellows, faculty, and staff.
- Enhance information services and resources to facilitate evidence-based practice, research, and scholarly inquiry.
- Collaborate with faculty to develop and deliver information literacy and course-integrated instruction.
- Expand the Savitt Medical Library services in support of research including systematic review, evidence synthesis, and scholarly communication services.
- Support the Savitt Medical Library faculty in expanding their liaison roles.
- Indirectly oversee the Savitt areas of technical services, circulation, and facilities, to ensure our user communities are receiving the best possible service.
- Lead efforts to integrate innovative technologies and digital resources into library services and operations.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, inclusivity, and continuous improvement within the library and across UNR Med.
- Develop and maintain partnerships with external organizations and consortia to expand access to library resources and services.
- Engage in professional development activities and scholarly pursuits to remain current with trends and best practices in academic librarianship.
- Maintain an atmosphere where all members of the Savitt team can work together in a positive and welcoming environment and achieve their individual and team goals.
Qualifications
Required:
- ALA-accredited MLIS or equivalent or terminal degree in a related discipline.
- Five years of professional library experience
- Successful managerial experience (e.g., personnel supervision, major project management, facilities operations, or research management)

- Experience working in a medical or health sciences library, with knowledge of specialized resources and services relevant to healthcare education and research.
- Current certification: Medical Library Association Academy of Health Information Professionals
- Familiarity with accreditation standards and best practices in academic health sciences librarianship, including liaison work with medical faculty and clinicians.
- Demonstrated success in budget management, grant writing, partnering with university development on fundraising efforts, and resource development to support library initiatives and programs.
- Experience in assessment and evaluation of library services and resources, including the use of data-driven decision-making to inform strategic planning and continuous improvement efforts.
- Experience with library space planning and renovation projects, including the design and implementation of innovative learning spaces and collaborative environments.
- Active participation in professional organizations and networks related to health sciences librarianship, with a record of contributions to the profession through presentations, publications, and committee work.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in library services and collections, with experience in developing and implementing initiatives to promote diversity and cultural competency within the library and its user community.
- Strong commitment to customer service, user-centered design, and innovation in library services.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Knowledge of emerging trends and technologies in academic librarianship, scholarly communication, and information management.

Compensation Grade
Director – Academic Faculty
This is a full-time academic faculty position that is non-tenure track at the level of Librarian 0(III) or Librarian 0(IV). However, depending on the successful candidate’s record of scholarship, service and achievement, a tenure-track position at the level of Associate or Full Professor may be considered.
