The Los Angeles Times is looking for a temporary deputy photo editor who can help lead the team of photographers and photo editors creating our award-winning news photography.
This deputy will help oversee the department's day-to-day operations in local, national and foreign news, politics, immigration and business.
This is a role for someone with a clear artistic vision, who would feel energized by the opportunity to push our photography to be even more cutting edge, experimental and reflective of Los Angeles and its creative community. They should have strong news judgment and confidence about what types of photography projects will help us deepen our relationship with Southern California readers.
Management experience or time spent managing photo editors, staff and freelance photographers or sets is a must. The ideal candidate should also have experience setting deadlines, managing a budget and creating coverage plans.
Responsibilities:
Lead all aspects of day-to-day photography, including handling photo requests and editing and publishing still images for both print and online
Work with both staff and freelance photographers to develop sophisticated visuals that surprise and inspire our readers
Collaborate across departments and build relationships
Work with newsroom leadership to help set and manage goals for the team
Create dynamic visual coverage in the rapidly evolving print and digital environment, as well as support the demands of social media that promotes the team's work
Manage a team of photo editors
Provide feedback to employees on their performance
Complete administrative tasks such as scheduling, timecard and expense approval
Requirements:
Minimum of 10 years of experience as a photo editor, with a background in news, politics and photo essays
High level of professionalism at all times
Experience producing portraits and collaborating with different stakeholders to bring ideas to life
Archival and photo illustration experience
Ability to work well under pressure and be able to make quick decisions, with the strength to go with your gut
Excellent photo editing skills
Expertise in technical skills including proficiency in Photoshop and color theory
Highly organized and able to work on simultaneous projects and/or tasks in a deadline-driven environment
Excellent communicator with people inside and outside the newsroom
Strong mentoring, leadership and collaborative skills
Extensively skilled at problem-solving
Extensive network of California creatives
Excellent taste and knowledge of current trends
Ability to work well in a team setting
Knowledge of journalism ethics and copyright
May appear on TV and radio on behalf of the L.A. Times and represent the organization at conferences, seminars, professional meetings and employer-sponsored events
This temporary position is expected to last nine months. We will consider candidates who would work remotely in other time zones as well as those who would work in El Segundo, Calif. Occasional night and weekend work is possible.

The pay scale the Company reasonably expects to pay for this position at the time of the posting is $64.90 to $68.27 and takes into account a wide range of factors including but not limited to skill set, experience, training, licenses, certifications, and other business or organizational needs. Compensation will be determined based on the above factors along with the requirements of the position. At the L.A.
