Position Overview: The Director of Brand Creative & Graphic Design will serve as the art director and visual storyteller for Lawrence University, making certain the university's brand is consistently represented across all visual communications. This includes overseeing brand compliance, creating and disseminating protocols, guidelines, and toolkits, and leading the design and production of print, digital, and multi-channel creative initiatives within the Office of Communications and Marketing.
This individual will work closely with members of the Communications and Marketing team and various campus partners to create compelling content that supports institutional priorities and drives measurable impact. Additionally, the Director will lead cross-functional creative teams, including contractors focused on design, web/UX, video, and photography, while overseeing relationships with key visual design freelancers and agencies.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES : Lead and manage high-profile design projects within the Office of Communications and Marketing. Design and produce digital and print collateral for various university initiatives, such as advertising, social media graphics, media guides, posters, t-shirts, large-format prints, flyers, and promotional materials. Make certain that all design work upholds the university's brand integrity and aligns with strategic goals, driving impactful visual communications. Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive branding guidelines for the university, driving consistency across all materials and platforms. Provide art direction for photo shoots, ensuring visual concepts align with the brand's identity and strategic objectives, while collaborating with photographers, stylists, and other creatives to produce high-quality imagery that enhances the overall brand presence. Collaborate with Web Development teams to keep the university website (www.lawrence.edu) on brand, up-to-date, and in line with current digital design practices and trends. Cultivate campus stakeholder relationships to enhance brand awareness and showcase assets. Oversee the design and execution of primary institutional environmental signage, including banners, interior signage, large-scale graphics, and other visual needs. Oversee the university's licensing program to assure all merchandise and promotional products reflects the university's brand. Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key vendors, freelancers, and agencies to deliver high-quality work on time for university projects. Qualifications:
Proven experience (7+ years) in graphic design and creative direction, with a strong portfolio that demonstrates expertise in visual design, branding, and campaign development. Strong hands-on skills in graphic design software (Adobe Creative Suite, etc.) and a deep understanding of design principles across both print and digital formats. Experience in UX design and a strong understanding of user-centered design principles, with the ability to lead website optimization projects. Expertise in managing the production of print and digital materials across various media, including brochures, magazines, and digital content. Strong leadership skills and experience in managing cross-functional teams, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external partners. Excellent project management skills with the ability to oversee multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring all deadlines and objectives are met. A keen eye for detail, with a deep understanding of how visual design and branding impact institutional storytelling and audience engagement. Experience in managing relationships with agencies, freelancers, and other creative collaborators. A degree in graphic design, marketing, communications, or a related field is preferred.
