About the Role:
MarketWatch is seeking an ambitious and energetic reporter for its Personal Finance team. As our Smart Spending reporter, you will identify trends that reveal how everyday people are either just getting by or thriving in today's economy. You will be as comfortable crunching economic data as you are interviewing strangers about the details of their finances. Though inflation has cooled, affordability remains a challenge for Americans on many fronts, including groceries, car payments, housing, insurance, and child care. Expenses that were once easily covered by a typical U.S. salary are now a struggle for many, even those with healthy incomes. On top of those are the costs of saving for emergencies and retirement, big purchases, college, and a house.
You Will:
- Quickly assess news to identify unique money-related angles and deliver insights beyond basic reporting.
- Examine affordability challenges and contextualize consumer issues by explaining broader economic, social, and political forces.
- Offer practical advice and expert analysis to help readers navigate financial decisions with clear, jargon-free explanations.
- Craft sophisticated features and enterprise stories that break down complex financial concepts.
- Pitch creative, compelling story ideas that reveal unique hacks, deals, and DIY strategies to save money.
- Write polished prose and craft sharp, memorable headlines.
- Gracefully juggle multiple stories simultaneously under pressure.
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues and other departments.
- Conduct insightful and empathetic interviews that add depth to reporting.
You Have:
- 3-5 years of reporting experience
- Fluency in consumer finance and economics
- A track record of writing unique, engaging financial stories
- Experience with finding unique angles off the news
- Facility with SEO and audience strategies
