Pay Range Information:Chapman University is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this position. This range takes into account a variety of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. Salary offers are determined based on the final candidates qualifications and experience, as well as internal equity and other internal factors. The anticipated pay range is not a promise of a particular wage.
Job Description Summary:Within the Access Services Division, the Library Assistant will perform the public service aspects of the Circulation Department. Provide student, staff, faculty and community patron assistance, including responding to in-person, telephone and email inquiries. Use the library system (Sierra) to check in/out library items including books, media, reserves and bookable rooms. Collect fines and/or negotiate acceptable resolutions. Conduct stacks maintenance including shelving, shifting and arranging of library materials. Perform patron registration and data entry. Conduct basic troubleshooting of photocopiers, printers and microform machines. Direct tasks of student employees. Open and/or close building. Provide support to Interlibrary Loan Services by assisting with document delivery, processing requests and answering inquires. Perform other duties as assigned to further the efficiency and services of the Leatherby Libraries.

This position may occasionally carry/lift loads of up to 25 lbs.
- Perform a majority of the public services aspects of the Circulation Department.
- Provide student, staff, faculty and community patron assistance, including responding to in-person, telephone and email inquiries.
- Use the library system (Sierra) to check in/out library items including books, media, reserves and bookable rooms.
- Collect fines and/or negotiate acceptable resolutions.
- Conduct stacks maintenance including shelving, shifting and arranging of library materials.
- Perform patron registration and data entry.
- Conduct basic troubleshooting of photocopiers, printers and microform machines.
- Direct tasks of student employees.
- Open and/or close building.
- Provide support to Interlibrary Loan Services.
- Process loans, returns and research requests submitted by patrons and other libraries via online computer systems.
- Assist with Document Delivery services.
- Check in/out Interlibrary Loan books and other materials.
- Process incoming and outgoing Interlibrary Loan mail.
- Perform other duties as assigned to further the efficiency and services of the Leatherby Libraries.
- Intermediate knowledge of written and spoken English, with the ability to read and write English at an appropriate level for this position.
- Intermediate knowledge of computers to include Microsoft Office, email, web browsing, and other software applications with an ability to learn new technology as needed for the position.
- Moderate contact with students, staff, faculty and community patrons on a general basis.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills to interact with diverse individuals and groups at all organizational levels from inside and outside of the university.
- Solid problem-solving skills with the ability to negotiate and resolve disputes.
- Strong commitment to customer service and teamwork.
- Ability to use photocopiers, printers, microform machines and learn basic troubleshooting skills for those machines.
- Possess strong organizational skills with the ability to carry out prioritized multiple projects with supervisors input.
- Possess skill to perform arithmetic calculations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
- Ability to work in a self-directed manner with prescribed duties, make appropriate decisions based on sound judgment, policy and guidelines.
- Ability to direct tasks of student employees.
- Ability to understand, discuss and apply policies, procedures and regulations pertaining to the duties of this position.
- Minimum of 12 months of library experience, or one year of college education or equivalent combination of experience/education.
- Ability to open/close building.
- Knowledge of library technology, processes and procedures preferably in an academic library.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of student records. FERPA training completed every two years (will train).
- Ability to use Sierra, WorldCat, OCLC, Tipasa and Article Exchange (will train).
