Role Overview
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced managing editor to join our team and oversee the daily operations and growth of two new brands, Metabolic Care Today and Derm Immunotherapy Today, which have targeted launch dates in May and June 2025. As the sites launch, the responsibilities for this position will include editorial planning and content development, plus audience and traffic growth post-launch.
A managing editor is a senior role responsible for the overall content strategy for their publications. A managing editor knows how to strategize with both internal and external partners, while effectively managing content production by junior editors and outside contributors. This role may have future direct reports.
Key Responsibilities:
Content Production
- Lead the content planning and production of the publications’ digital and print initiatives, including website, social media, e-newsletters and print materials.
- Produce and edit content across formats, including text, video, and audio that engages a physician or HCP audience.
- Recruit and manage a network of physician contributors.
- Produce content that meets the specifications of sold projects.
- Partner with internal teams including projects, sales and production, to satisfy client campaigns while maintaining editorial integrity.
- Oversee internal and external freelance contributors, assigning content and ensuring timely delivery of products that meet department standards.
- Manage the editorial review process across products, including email newsletters, ensuring all input and feedback is appropriately addressed.
- Represent the publications in person and virtually at major industry meetings and conferences, including directing all news coverage and networking with KOLs.
Brand Growth
- Actively recruit and interface with HCP partners, including editorial board members as applicable, on content planning, production and approvals.
- Work closely with the senior managing editor, DocWire News, to develop a strategic vision for the brands, aligning editorial strategies with company goals and audience needs.
- Manage the publication’s editorial budget, including delivering required content within budget and forecasting estimated spending during budget reviews.
- Audit brand platforms regularly to identify performance trends, content gaps, and opportunities for process improvement.
- Adhere to standard editorial operating procedures and contribute to development of team best practices.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior editors, offering support in their professional development.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or English (preferred) OR
- Degree in Medicine, Public Health, or a Science-related field (especially for technical medical news)
- Experience in medical journalism, editing, or publishing (minimum of 5 years; 5-7 years preferred)
- Experience in managing an editorial team with direct reports
Skills & Knowledge:
- Strong writing & editing skills (AP style, AMA style, or scientific writing preferred)
- Understanding of medical and scientific terminology
- Ability to interpret and summarize complex medical studies
- Fact-checking & research skills (ensuring accuracy in reporting)
- SEO & digital publishing knowledge (for online platforms)
- Familiarity with peer-reviewed journals and regulatory agencies (e.g., FDA, WHO, CDC)
