The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) partners with faculty, students, and colleagues across the University to support excellence and innovation in teaching and learning. The CTL is committed to advancing the culture of teaching and learning at Columbia through all of its programs, services, and resources. The Senior Manager communicates the CTL's philosophy, programs, services, and projects to the University, National, and Global communities. The incumbent creates and delivers materials to support work with faculty, schools, departments, and administrators to ensure the Center's services and programs are well known and understood. The position provides writing and editing expertise in support of public communication products for publication online, in digital media, and in printed products. Responsibilities The Sr. Communications and Outreach Manager (SCOM) communicates the CTL's philosophy, programs, services and projects to the University, National and Global communities. The incumbent creates and delivers materials to support work with faculty, schools, departments and administrators to ensure the Center's services and programs are well known and understood. The SCOM provides writing and editing expertise in support of public communication products for publication online, in digital media, and in printed products. This includes the creation and oversight of e-newsletters, social media channels, mailings, email announcements, flyers, brochures, and reports. Works with designers to optimize formats for both print and online formats, and assures all materials incorporate Columbia University accessibility requirements. (15%) Researches and writes numerous news announcements, press releases, features and other postings covering CTL's programs, events, and featured instructors in order to maintain a vibrant online community. Must be able to meet expected throughput and deadlines. (15%) The SCOM develops and maintains the Center's website on a daily basis and supervises student workers who assist with various communications tasks including website and newsletter updates. (15%) Uses strategic mechanisms to track, monitor, and analyze the impact and effectiveness of such efforts. Assists the Associate Director of Assessment and Evaluation with measuring the impact of new CTL resources. The goal is to continually draw new audiences to participate in the CTL's programs and events, and to engage the Columbia teaching community with the CTL. (10%) Initiates outreach and maintains relationships with editors of industry news sites to support publications by CTL and OTLI leadership. Assists with editing of articles. (5%) Collaborates closely with the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Innovation (OTLI) in the Office of the Provost on a wide range of projects, events, and urgent requests. Contributions include routine assistance with content strategy for OTLI managed websites and other public-facing web assets, and providing strategic direction for assets and communications around them. Writes and edits communication collateral (web copy, posters, logos, email campaigns, etc.) to promote OTLI events such as Provost Conversations on Online Learning (PCoOL) events. (15%) SCOM manages the creation of promotional materials for our

podcast, including listening to each episode, writing the episode descriptions, and managing the outreach to guests for accompanying headshots and bios. Monitors the weekly, monthly and total activity on all of our podcast platforms and submits this data for our annual reporting. (5%) Works closely with the Center's Executive Director and the CTL leadership team as an organizer and strategist for faculty and graduate student development and outreach, and plans and project manages outreach efforts. (15%) Coordinates formal events for external visitors to the CTL in consultation with the Executive Director. (5%)
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree required and 3-5 years of experience in the public relations field in a university, or comparable environment, including digital humanities and social science experience. Proven track record of innovative communication strategies and productivity. Must have flawless attention to detail, superior writing skills, a professional approach to communication, excellent organizational and planning skills, and strong interpersonal skills. Superior project management and time management skills. Must be responsive to the constantly evolving needs of a multi-faceted department and effectively meet deadlines. Strong knowledge and proven aptitude in all aspects of Internet communications, including blogs and social media. Experience producing reports, brochures, and audiovisual materials. Ability to work independently, as well as in collaboration with a team. Advanced facility with web applications, word processing, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, and graphic software packages. Proven ability to learn and intelligently speak about complex media and digital applications, teaching and learning in higher education, and the intersections of these domains.
Preferred Qualifications Advanced degree in related field. Experience with Microsoft PowerPoint, WordPress, and MailChimp services. Sustained experience working with faculty in higher education and technology.
