The Mississippi Department of Archives and History seeks a director of public relations to serve in the Programs and Communication Division. The director of public relations manages some public engagement activities, including press releases, the news section of the MDAH website, and supervises the public information officer. Specific duties include:

• Writes and distributes press releases
• Responds in a timely manner to media inquiries
• Coordinates with appropriate division directors to prepare media statements
• Builds relationships with local reporters and engages them with the work of the department.
• Monitors MDAH in the news media
• Responds to and coordinates filming and photography requests for MDAH and all sites.
• Prepares MDAH staff to handle media interviews by providing background research and writing talking points.
• Develops and implements communications with the public via Constant Contact, including outreach emails about MDAH programs and initiatives.
• Represents MDAH at conferences or other events of tourism, public relations and museum associations.
• Supervises public information officer: oversees production of MDAH’s Weekly Update and other Constant Contact communications; advises on distribution of MDAH info requests to department divisions; and reviews calendar of events content.

To be successful in this role, candidates should possess:

• Previous experience in a managerial public relations position
• Strong writing and editing skills
• Proficiency in time management
• Excellent communication abilities

Preferred Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations or related field, with 5+ years of experience working in public relations or marketing
• Proficient in AP Style.
• Proficient in the Microsoft Suite and Microsoft Teams.
• Working knowledge of Meltwater Monitoring Service
• Working knowledge of Constant Contact
