The Editor works with the Newsroom as part of the Content Division to structure, fact check, and polish stories from Daily Kos staff and freelance writers and prepare them for publication. The Editor also helps prepare outside content from the AP wire, nonprofit newsrooms, and content partners, to be republished at Daily Kos. This position reports to the Managing Editor. The position may require weekend work. LOCATION: Fully remote within the US Job Type: Full Time, (Pacific Time Zone Working Hours) Salary: $82,400-$92,952.87 annually Responsibilities + Edit Daily Kos staff and freelance stories for tone, structure, style, grammar, syntax, and punctuation, working with writers on rewrites as needed to ensure all content reflects Daily Kos editorial mission and complies with the Code of Ethics. + Ensure that all stories conform to editorial guidelines and are written in a clear, concise, and engaging style. + Fact-check articles to ensure accuracy and integrity of information. + Format edited content in the Daily Kos CMS. + Work with writers to improve and strengthen their craft. + Identify and prevent duplicate content and plagiarism. + Work with other editors to craft headlines and select images. + Prepare outside content, including cartoons and AP wire stories, to be republished at Daily Kos. + Work with other editors to help maintain and update Daily Kos stylebook as appropriate. + Work cross-departmentally to write and edit newsletters that promote Daily Kos content. + Help the Newsroom find and track stories to cover. + Other responsibilities as assigned. Experience: + 4+ years of editing experience in a print and/or digital newsroom or similar setting. + Experience working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment Qualifications: + Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills. + Fluency in AP style and other editorial guidelines. + Knowledge of U.S. progressive politics and news. + Excellent news judgment. + Impeccable attention to detail. + Ability to multitask in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. + Comfortable with a virtual working environment. + Be tech and internet savvy (we use Google Docs, Slack, Dropbox, Asana, and lots of other tools that make work life easier) + Availability to generally work Pacific time zone core hours (Roughly 9am PST-5pm PST) This position is represented by the Pacific Media Workers Guild, Local 39521 of the NewsGuild-Communication Workers America.
