The Department of Music Studies at Rider University is seeking an adjunct co-instructor in Music Education to teach ME262: Art of Teaching Music (ATM) II for the Fall 2025 semester, starting September 2, 2025. This 4-credit course focuses on secondary general music education methods and includes supervision of practicum students.
Fall 2025 Meeting Times:
Tuesdays 9:45 am - 11:15 am; Thursdays 9:45 am - 12:30 pm
Course Description:
ATM II is part of a comprehensive sequence designed to prepare future music educators, emphasizing pedagogically sound approaches to teaching music in secondary settings, including general music, technology, and ensembles. The course promotes meaningful music experiences fostering success, community, critical thinking, and lifelong engagement, grounded in constructivism and critical pedagogy. A significant focus will be on core pedagogical skills within the framework of modern band.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare students for a general music curriculum and supervise 10-15 hours of clinical observation with in-service teachers.
- Develop and deliver engaging lessons, lectures, activities, and assignments aligned with pedagogical goals.
- Guide students in applying principles of constructivism and critical pedagogy.
- Teach methods for secondary general music, emphasizing modern band instruments and technology.
- Facilitate active, student-centered learning experiences.
- Assess student learning and provide feedback.
- Hold office hours for support and mentorship.
- Use the university's LMS for communication, materials, and grades.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 5+ years of successful music teaching experience in public or private schools.
- BM and MM in Music Education or equivalent.
- Emphasis on General Music for Elementary and Middle School.
- Satisfactory background and DMV checks required.
