Overview
The Videographer & Editor is an independent, creative leader responsible for creating memorable, emotional digital content that furthers the KU brand. This individual will produce long- and short-form digital content to meet strategic marketing objectives through digital storytelling and video creation. The Videographer & Editor must be both a self-starter and able to work closely with other KU Marketing staff in crafting meaningful content. They provide creative oversight to student employees. When needed, the Videographer & Editor must work independently outside of standard office hours to capture compelling digital content.
The ideal person for this role enjoys collaboration with professional teammates with strong shooting and production skills who is obsessed with capturing and creating videos that tell captivating stories.
This position is mostly in-person at the Lawrence campus with occasional ability to work from home. A portion of time also will be spent on location at the Edwards Campus (Overland Park) and KU Medical Center. Some evening and weekend work hours are required, and there are expectations and opportunities for some travel related to photo and video shoots.
Job Description40% Video editing
- Work independently to cut video and audio to create stylish and emotional content that tells the story of KU.
- Make informed editorial decisions based on strategic and partner objectives, delivery platform, viewing medium, and creative goals.
- Consult with creative team throughout revision and development process to create the highest quality product possible.
- Review and prepare files for final delivery to a variety of platforms.
- Organize and archive video footage and project files using standard systems and common sense.
- Conduct file searches for teammates and partners and assist with other external video production requests.
20% Video producing
- Actively participate in brainstorming, script-writing, storyboarding, planning, and other pre-production tasks with team members and partners (clients).
- Develop compelling stories that appeal to a variety of audiences.
- Implement input and feedback from partners and audience surveys.

- and procuring releases and documentation.
20% Camera operation, cinematography, audio recording
- Use video cameras to visually record the experiences at the University of Kansas and on external shoots in compelling fashion for use in marketing materials.
- Set up lights, cameras, and audio to record the best possible picture for documentary and scripted productions.
- Maintain, test, and repair video and lighting equipment for reliable performance in high-stakes productions.
10% Student supervision
- Train, mentor and supervise students in video, photo and other digital media creation.
10% Other duties as assigned
- Participate in training, department and campus-wide meetings, and team activities.
- Communicate with internal and external parties.
- Maintain project and payroll time-tracking.
- Attend staff and partner meetings.
- Work collegially with staff and partners in a team environment.
- As needed, prepare and present research, work, or recommendations to internal and/or partner teams.
- An Associate's or higher degree in relevant field, plus minimum of 3 years of related experience.
- A portfolio that shows evidence of creative content generation and savvy video creation skills, including a demo reel.
- 2 years of Adobe Premier Pro experience.
- Work experience that required interpersonal and communication skills, as evidenced by application materials.
- Work experience that required organization and multi-tasking skills with an attention to detail, as evidenced by application materials.
- Experience providing creative input and oversight to creative peers and subordinates.
- Experience in Adobe After Effects.
- Strong understanding of camera operation, exposure, lighting, and aesthetic principals.
- Previous experience producing video for institution of higher learning, non-profit, or charitable foundation.
- Professional experience working with video and audio for use on the web as well as in broadcast media.
- Experience in advertising, visual communications, and/or brand development.
- Experience working with metadata and a multi-user production environment.
- Ability to meet tight deadlines with grace under pressure, as evidenced by application materials.
- Ability to respond to direction and adapt to frequent changes in project tactics, creative strategy, and/or deadlines, as evidenced by application materials.
